April 15, 2005Excerpts of Mapes’ Book TreatmentDoubtless, someone else online will have the whole angry, ugly, purple and highly paranoid document, soon enough. But until then, here are a few juicy excerpts: “Conservative bloggers are part of the story. They have vilified me, mounted a “wilding” attack against me…we were, it seemed the first victims of a new kind of digital McCarthyism, which uses the same techniques as the old McCarthyism–rumors, slurs, false charges and ugly attacks–but now employs the Internet, talk radio and cable TV echo chamber to ricochet information around the world…meanwhile, the mainstream media…were happy to stoke the firewood on a competitor’s funeral pyre, repeating the conservative blogs, mischaracterizing events and not doing any real reporting of their own. Honestly, it hurt. It all hurt terribly….” I’ll take you inside CBS as panic spread like mad cow disease during the initial blogging attacks, turning “60 Minutes Wednesday” into “Survivor,” where employees were pitted against each other to try to outwit, outmaneuver and outlast everyone else. In the end, we were all voted off the island except, of course, for the architect of the cruel game, Andrew Heyward…” There is more, and some of it is downright explosive, but I’m not printing it here; your Anchoress doesn’t want that much heat. Suffice to say, Mapes is channeling Al Pacino in both Dog Day Afternoon and Scarface. She says, “say hello to my little friend, insider knowledge,” and then fires her Gatling gun at everyone from Julie Chen to Les Moonves to Dick Thornburgh. It is easy to imagine her pummeling her hands in the air screeching, “Attica! Attica! Attica!” It’s stuff that makes you say, “OUCH, that’s gonna leave a mark!” I read this and I can’t decide if I want to vomit, weep or laugh until my guts spew forth. Journalists used to be my heroes. Meanwhile, I DO love this take off on A Few Good Men. UPDATE: Sigh. Scoops never last, anymore! See, the Daily News has it, too, and THEY will go where I would not go in this 16 page mess: CBS President and Viacom Co-President Les Moonves, the husband of “Early Show” co-host Julie Chen: “Moonves demonstrated what has been joked about for years: that everything he knows about journalism has been sexually transmitted.” (I SO wanted to include that, earlier!!!) CBS News President Andrew Heyward: “The architect of the cruel game. … [When CBS News execs Betsy West and Josh Howard nearly caused Mapes to miss her deadline by injecting themselves in the notorious Guard story], they were there because Andrew didn’t want to be. Then, if something went wrong, he could blame them.” Later, Mapes claims in the proposal, Heyward visited the White House and “reportedly promised a high-ranking Bush adviser that the network would ‘do better.’” Former CBS News Senior Vice President West: In the midst of the controversy, she accompanied Mapes and Rather to Dallas for a hostile interview with Bill Burkett, the source of the disputed documents. “Seeing [Burkett and wife Nicki] praying in a hotel room before the interview, [West] reports to all of us, ‘There is something very odd going on in there.’ ‘Betsy, welcome to Texas. They’re praying.’” Former Attorney General Dick Thornburgh, co-chairman of the “Star Chamber,” as Mapes calls it, “seemed oddly fascinated with my use of the word ‘horse-.’ I am not making this up.” UPDATE: You know what is REALLY embarrassing? Apparently this thing ran in the morning edition of the Daily News, and I never saw it! Nor, apparently, did my friend! OUCH!!!!! But, I can laugh at myself. I DID take the “exclusive” off my header! I dumb. My friend dumb. We both blushing! BUT: I will take a bow for being the only one with the “wilding” quote, which is pre-tty dang inflammatory. And I think it’s interesting as all get out that no one on the internet came across this before me, which means, I guess, that perhaps we simply aren’t looking to MSM print media very much at all. And THAT is interesting, in and of itself! UPDATE II: Many are taking me to task for claiming that journalists used to be my heroes, but I’ll stand by it. There used to be lots of great ones…how about Gilbert Keith Chesterton? How about Mark Twain, A.J. Leibling, Ernest Hemingway, E.B.White, Lillian Ross, Edward R. Murrow, Charles Collingwood, Charles Kuralt, or even up to the minute folks like the late Michael Kelly, the late David Bloom, John Burns, Laurie Goodstein, Peggy Noonan, John Allen… There are still some to admire within the fourth estate. Unfortunately, their names do not roll so easily off the tongue as the Connies, the Dianes, the Paulas, the Brians and the…the Stones. A flap of the cowl to the monk-in-exile (no site - he knows who he is) for contributing to much of the list of good ol’ journos! http://theanchoressonline.com/2005/04/15/anchoress-exclusive-excerpts-of-mapes-book-treatment/trackback/ 57 Responses to “Excerpts of Mapes’ Book Treatment” |

Come on! sing it with me one more time:
“once I built a railroad, made it run, made it run against time.
once I built a railroad, now its gone, brother can you spare a dime…”
I love stories like this the way NASCAR fans like a good wreck on the first lap.

What an angry, bitter crone! Bet the book, after the initial wave of publicity, winds up on the remindered table.
P.S. How mean of you not to give us trhe really down and dirty stuff!
April 15th, 2005 at 3:20 pm
Oops! ‘Remaindered’ was what I meant.
April 15th, 2005 at 3:25 pm
You mean the same kinds of journalists who ran bogus stories about seal hunts used to be your heros. Say it isn’t so.
Time was that you could depend on the news telling the story as it happened. Now, you have to wait until the bloggers get through fact checking before you can believe anything coming from the news because of the lost faith in the fact checking capabilities within the media itself.
April 15th, 2005 at 3:27 pm
McCarthy was right and so were the bloggers who correctly pointed out the “memo” as submitted by CBS was typed on a computer using MS Word, not on a typewriter.
I hope MM tells all about her involvement in Abu Gharib. That’ll be even more fascinating story.
April 15th, 2005 at 3:29 pm
Bigger question, is 60 Minutes going to pull out the welcome mat for her, as they did for Paul O’Neill, Richard Clarke, Anonymous, Joe Wilson, et al.
Somehow, I don’t think so.
Anchoress, what could have POSSIBLY led you to make heroes of journalists? Journalists????????????
A profession with the likes of John Reed, Walter Duranty, I.F. Stone and their modern equivalent, Stephen Glass, Jayson Blair, and now Rather and the frenzied Mary Mapes.

Mapes is like a mad dog, so utterly disillusioned and overcome with blinding rage she snarls and snaps at everyone in range. Sadly, her all too typical response to the mess she made is to blame others. Yes, she’s right about the eager reception her smear found among CBS leaders. It was red meat to other hungry dogs. But, she put the story on the table, she contacted the players, she called the Kerry campaign, she sought the documents, and she pushed the story. And, she got caught and now she’s squealing like a stuck pig. Well, seem she hasn’t learned anything, and that’s hard cheese, isn’t it.
April 15th, 2005 at 3:33 pm
You think that’s bad… you ought to see the script for the movie version.
April 15th, 2005 at 3:34 pm
That’s “Gatling”. Should be amusing reading the rest. Or maybe dismaying to see that she hadn’t learned anything at all from the whole mess. Kind of like Coby getting kicked off the island and imagining that it was because they respected him as a competitor. Except he really did have some ability there.

I don’t know about the rest of the conservative blogosphere, but I sure take offense at being called a sexual predator.
For those who aren’t familiar with the term, ‘wilding’ first came into prominence with the 1989 Central Park Jogger case.
Since I can’t figure out how to trackback, for more on this, here’s a link

Aw, c’mon. If you were Mary, had no prospects for employment in your industry of choice and needed to sell a few books to make ends meet, what would you write? This at least gives her a shot at, say, 5% of the market for Michael Moore books…
April 15th, 2005 at 4:10 pm
“Wilding” and “McCarthism” all in the same paragraph? What about “Witchhunt?” I wanted the liberal knee-jerk oh-woe-is-me-I-did-wrong-but-I’m-a-victim trifecta.
Damn she disappoints.

Mary Mapes: Victim

As I recall, an “anchorite” was a “Pillar Saint”, one who resided atop a pillar or column in Byzantine milieus, the higher reaches being akin to nearing God. A form of vertical hermit, if you will.
The Emperor Charles V dwelt in a chapel, near the High Altar of his cathedral, for years, but I don’t remember him ever being thought of as “Eremetic as an Anchorite.”
There was a Bunuel film of this genre, too… the Pillar Saint, contantly tempted by Satan in many absurd forms, was a stunning example of what it takes not to “have a life.”
April 15th, 2005 at 4:17 pm
“the same techniques as the old McCarthyism–rumors, slurs, false charges and ugly attacks”
Does this remind anyone else of the tactics employed by … Mary Mapes and CBS against Bush? Pot, meet kettle.
Of course, while MM’s broadsides against Bush were false, the “ugly attacks” she and CBS sustained in response were largely correct.
April 15th, 2005 at 4:21 pm
Mapes equates conservative bloggers with sexual predators…

“we were, it seemed the first victims of a new kind of digital McCarthyism, which uses the same techniques as the old McCarthyism–rumors, slurs, false charges and ugly attacks”
I guess Ms. Mapes isn’t aware of the Venona papers. Or the fact that she’s being hypocritical in her allegations in that statement. False charges and ugly attacks anyone?
Anyone else notice how the Left loves to label anything that challenges them as McCarthyism? I’m also annoyed when they try to blame McCarthy for HUAC. Apparently they don’t understand the difference between the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives.

I wonder if she realizes that the entire ‘wilding’ incident turned out to be completely wrong? The teens they sent to prision who allegedly participated in the incident turned out to be innocent when the real rapist confessed. If anything, the ‘wilding’ incident, which was largely media driven, shows how long the MSM have been getting away with, if not murder, then at least the incarceration of innocents.
April 15th, 2005 at 7:09 pm
Darn - I missed the “wilding”
If you missed it, that title is delivered with an extreme level of sarcasm, including my eyes nearly rolling out of my head. What prompted such a reaction? Only a few excerpts from Mapes’ book treatment.

With that ‘wilding’ quote, Mapes gives little thought to how she has denigrated other women, showing herself to be another blinders-on, fair-weather feminist like those who couldn’t care a whit about rape rooms in Iraq, UN atrocities in Congo, or Taliban abuses in Afghanistan. It’s all about “me, me, me”.

#37 - I didn’t censor your post. I deleted it because you had included a link that was so long it threw my site out of alignment or proportion or whatever.
If you look around, you’ll see, I almost never censor, or delete a comment, unless it gets personal, or if the language is truly objectionable. I figure I let people say what they want and display themselves to be who they are.
But please…believe as you like.

I am left to wonder exactly what Mary Mapes hopes to achieve with her book. Apart from the glee, that is attributed to the childish act of a poke-in-the-eye (no pun intended), the treatment, excerpts and/or whatever all make the crew at CBS (Mapes included) look even worse than before.

MARY MAPES, RECENTLY OF CBS, THE LASS WHO GOT CAUGHT WITH HER FINGERS IN THE “FAKE BUT ACCURATE” COOKIE JAR, NOW HAS HER KNICKERS IN A TWIST OVER BEING CAUGHT OUT. YES, MIXING METAPHORS IS A NO-NO, BUT IT’S FUN. AND TO MAKE IT EVEN MORE HUMOUROUS, SHE HAD TO REINTRODUCE GOOD ‘OL TAILGUNNER JOE. IF McCARTHY DIDN’T EXIST THE LEFTIST DIMS WOULD HAVE HAD TO CREATE HIM. HER POINT, OF COURSE, IS THAT ALL ELSE IS LIES AND SHE UTTERS THE TRUTH THROUGH HER MOUTHPIECE, DAN, “courage” RATHER. GOD, FOLLOWING THE LEFTIST DIMWITS IN THEIR SPIRAL INTO THE PITS IS JUST TOO MUCH FUN, AND ALL YOU NEED IS ACCESS TO THE INTERNET.
April 17th, 2005 at 2:49 pm
Fascinating behavior. But…there’s a hellofa cautionary tale here:
Fact is, most of the 48% that voted for Kerry *truly, truly* believe the kind of tales Mapes is spinning.
Everyone here is (understandably) amused that Mapes is seriously peddling such a seemingly warped view of *herself as victim*, while totally disregarding her own awful misdeeds. But the Left/Dems aren’t gonna see it that way: When they read that she’s been the ‘victim of a McCarthyite attack’ from bloggers, the Left will all nod as one and sympathize.
I truly believe this country is in for a *lot* of trouble as the Left gets reorganized.
