In today’s MSM quotes just vanish!

“I think it is a little hypocritical of Senator Clinton to call on me to repudiate a political figure’s comments when she never asked Senator Durbin to repudiate his comments. Senator Clinton might think about her propensity to allow outrageous statements from the other side that are far beyond political dialogue –insulting every Republican, comparing our soldiers to Nazis or Soviet gulag guards– and never protesting when she serves with them.”

Oh, and Rep Peter King of Long Island reminds us of one more ”Karl Rove deserves a medal,” King said. “Hillary Clinton, she’s the one who went to the floor of the Senate and implied President Bush knew about Sept. 11 and let it happen.”

Yesterday those two quotes were in an online story at newsday.com, but if you go back, today, you will not find them.

Sez Hugh Hewitt:

The Senate Democrats’ #2 compares the American military to Nazis, Stalinists, and Pol Pot’s killer, and the story never gets near to the cover of the Washington Post. Karl Rove makes a valid assertion about the behavior of liberals, backed by evidence, and the fake outrage of those Senate Democrats makes page 1, but in a story without the pointed reply of George Pataki which happens to pivot on Durbin’s slander. At least the New York Times included a portion of the Pataki quote, which has now vanished from the original Newsday article.

This is of a piece with the LA Times editing out any responses made by Rumsfeld and his generals (as they testified before the Senate, yesterday) that did not fit their “quagmire” narrative.

It is of a piece with the NY Times simply not even bothering to report on what Roger L. Simon calls the biggest terrorism trial since 9/11.
Look through the NY Times all you want, you won’t find this story.

It has been called “the most significant terrorism trial” since 9-11: the first time alleged leaders of Islamic Jihad, self-confessed killers of more than 100 Israelis and two Americans, are being tried in an American court; the first time the controversial Patriot Act has lassoed jihadists of this magnitude; and the first time that Arab professors in an American university who have claimed “academic freedom” for their pro-Palestinians views have been indicted for using their university offices to direct and finance terrorist activity.

Yet most New Yorkers are oblivious to this case because The New York Times, let alone most other northern newspapers, has decided not to cover the extraordinary testimony being heard now in a Tampa, Fla., courtroom.

It is of a piece with the American President having to ASK the press to please give him a little television coverage so that he can talk to America about some of the progress being made in the War on Terror and in Iraq. Air time he is asking for because the press refuses to report on anything that does not fit the “quagmire” narrative they have lovingly framed. We’ll see if they will have it. I doubt it. They have invested a great deal into their narrative and they’re not going to want to see it mussed.

Btw, Mudville Gazette is the goto place for Iraq news…

The press in America has decided to walk away from its duties to keep the public trust. Resolutely and overtly liberal, openly hostile to the president and only slightly less obviously hostile to our troops, and seemingly determined to create 1969 all over again, this is a press intent on bringing down, not building up, intent on doom and fatalism, not hope or optimisim.

And it is a press which is committed to the defeat of any and all members of the GOP unless they are revered “mavericks” who can be counted on to dissent from their party. (There are no Democrat “mavericks” by the way. If one pops up, like Zell Miller, he is quickly whacked down.)

Evan Thomas famously predicted that the unquestioning, glassy eyed support of the press for John Kerry would give him 10-15% point advantage in the ‘04 election. By the time the ‘08 election rolls around, these people will be so entrenched in their habit of suppressing information they don’t like, “vanishing” quotes that don’t fit their narrative, and polishing up every smudge and dent of a Democrat candidate, no matter who that candidate may be, that it’s going to be an ugly, ugly season. And it should frighten you, because a uniquely ambitious candidate who gets propelled into office by an adoring and unquestioning press…is a uniquely powerful president who can then take a giant step into tyranny. Was it Stalin who said “who owns the press, owns the throne?”

Something like that.

The mainstream media are utterly owned by the Democrat party and especially by its princess.

The throne awaits.

Speaking of the press. I used to always subscribe to at least one newspaper on the principle that freedom of the press doesn’t work if the press cannot afford to print. They have lost me but, interestingly enought, I still get the paper for free. Could it be that they need to artificially boost circulation figures for advertising revenue?

eweiss at L.com http://www.lucianne.com/threads2.asp?artnum=220767 found the URL late last night for the AP story as originally written. It contains hyphens, so I expect that it won’t cause a width problem on this web page.

He was lying like a Republican?

I guess he made up the quotes from liberals and democrats that are flying all over the web, today, eh, GD?

  4. Sigmund, Carl and Alfred Says:

As someone who lived in NY for a few years, allow me, Ghost Dansing, to use a local vernacular: You’re a shmuck- not only a shmuck, but an idiot shmuck.

The apologies need to come from the animals that caused 9/11. The apologies need to come from the idiots (like you) that will excuse or apologize for 9/11.

The apologies need to come from you- not because you dissent- that in itself is honorable- but rather, because you cannot deal with the truth. The fact remains that you cannot simply wipe away the truth because it doesn’t quite fit fit your agenda. There are plenty of people who dissent and disagree with the administrations policies and do so with honesty and integrity, unlike yourself.

That’s because you are a dishonest shmuck. But hey, you already knew that.

  5. convert Says:

GD’s conscience must be bothering him or something. Rove said liberals, not Democrats per se. Moveon.org and those types. Oh. Those really far- out people ARE the Democratic party, I see. Truth hurts.

Anchoress, this is one of your best columns ever. Wish I could email it to everybody!

  6. Darrell Says:

GD is right. The Left must be stopped at all costs. Much easier to do now, thanks to their own stupidity. The dustbins await.

  7. me2ewe Says:

Hmm … disappearing quotes, changed news stories … George Orwell and the Ministry of Truth, anyone?

  8. Darrell Says:

Durbins remarks struck a chord with all Americans who wonder why he not in Federal prison for violating National Security by disclosing Stealth Satellite secrets….

  9. Bob Diethrich Says:

My unanswered question about the media (at least I think that was Madame Anchoress’s original intent with this post) is from last fall before the election.

I posited a question to one of my fellow teachers, a die hard liberal and firmly entrenched in the “Bush is a retard” camp and she had no answer.

She finally admitted that the mainstream media were overwhelmingly pro Kerry and that the Times was literally cheerleading for the Senator. (Of course she did this after always setting up the Straw Man of “But what about Fox News?” I shot this one down with Anne Coulter’s “okay we admit it about Fox now will you admit etc. etc. etc.”)

Anyway, I said to her, so what if Kerry wins? What about all those mainstream news publications that literally did all they could to secure his victory, at the expense of what little integrity they had left. So are these media organs all of a sudden going to turn arournd and be critical of him? After all their hard work for his campaign are they going to go tough on this guy. give a hard look at his policies or can we expect more of the same?

    She had no answer!

Boy the main stream press would be essentially an arm of the government. Can you say ‘pravda’ Boys and Girls?

And that terrifies me to no end!
