EU’s economy slogging along, BUT!!!

There is always a BUT in these stories. When we read that the US economy is growing very well, we routinely read in the next line, BUT analysist caution that things could change at any moment, or somesuch.

Because, you know, the man in the WH has the wrong letter after his name.

BUT! Since this time, we’re talking about the EU, the BUT is a little different:

Economic growth in the European Union as a whole and the euro zone nations that use the euro currency slowed to 0.3 percent in the second quarter, the EU said Thursday, but growth in the 12 nations using the common currency is expected to pick up by the end of the year.

I guess the which way the BUT falls depends entirely on whether they want to “frame” the news to help or hurt.

UPDATE: EU Rota has interesting info and graphs on Eurozone economies that seem a bit skeptical. Check it out.

And We Should Try to Be More Like Them? Uh, No Thanks

The Associated Press reports on the sizzling (NOT) economies of the European Union (HT Anchoress, who quite correctly observes that the AP article’s tone is quite forgiving in the face of such mediocrity):

Economic growth in the European Union…

That’s why they are agaim trotting out the Global Warming Doomsday predictions…The WWF(Wildlife Federation, not Wrestling) is comparing the past three years to 1970-73….Why? Because 1970-73 were cool years so they show they biggest change. Of course the 100 year change is a whopping 0.8 degrees C….TOTAL! Wow! Stop the presses! But ignore that, and look at that 1970-73 data…that shows a couple of degree swing… EuroScience, like real science only less useful!

For you investors out there, I’m putting a real value of the Euro at US$0.43 What it should be without market interference(propping up by the US and Japan), given real growth and unemployment since its issuance. Just a heads up….

[...] Maybe it’s time to bring back cub reporters - people who are in the profession because they love to write and they love to tell a story. It seems to me so many of the press’ problems would go away if they would simply get back to reporting news, rather than trying to “frame” it. You know - let good news BE “good news,” stop “framing” it with the everpresent, negative BUT… and tell the anchors to stop reporting such stories with a grimace that suggests they need a dose of magnesia.
