Tracey at Worship Naked found a good ‘un.

I am collecting knitted goods for the victims of Katrina that are here in Houston. I plan on making baby bootees first - a little yarn goes a long, long way when it comes to bootees. It is 92 degrees in Houston today, so no one needs heavy clothing. As time goes on - I’m sure the victims will be here through the fall - things like blankets, sweaters, and really anything else will be needed. If you would like to send goods, please leave a comment and we will work out the details. One very important detail - make sure the items you send are easy to wash. Yarns that can be tossed in the machine to wash and dry are the best option.

I think it’s a lovely idea and one way for people to feel they’re doing something tangible. And I think that’s a natural human impulse we have at moments like this…So if you can knit or crochet — and I know I have a least one reader VERY talented in this area — pop on over to her site for the details and consider using your gifts to wrap the littlest homeless ones in some homemade love and warmth. Something you can give with your very own hands.
She’s right. And I happen to know that I have some big-time knitters who read here, because they’ve purchased knitting books via Amazon!
I can’t knit, but I can crochet…I’m going to participate in this!

I have been really impressed by how gung-ho people have been, coming up with creative and longterm ways to help the hurricane victims.
The knitting idea is a super one.

You have time for crocheting? Oh well…My days only have 24 hours in them! You never cease to amaze me!

Heh. Darrell, lemmee give you a little secret: Don’t sleep!
Except when my blood situation lays me out, (and then all I do is sleep and whine) I basically am UP ALL NIGHT!

Boo, I can’t knit. In fact, the last female in my family who could (or at least did so regularly) was my great-grandmother, whom I coincidentally mentioned in my blog post of yesterday.
It’s a shame when people lack the skills our immediate forebears had.
In related news, my mother is volunteering tomorrow to pack CARE packages to the ravaged Katrina survivors in Mississippi. Our church, St. Patrick’s, is sponsoring the drive.
Maybe they’ll include some knitted goodies some other good volunteer made.
P.S.: Anchoress, not sure you are still awake, but it was just announced Saturday night. I’m sure you’ll be blogging your thoughts, but it is interesting that just when the Katrina Bush-blame-a-thon was starting to really achieve critical mass, this happens. And of course, on Tuesday, the Roberts hearings start.
See, I told you once, Bush 43 is a unlucky-lucky President…
Cheers,
Victoria

Oops, somehow the P.S. ate what I wrote. “CJ William Rehnquist passed away Saturday night”.

Victoria, why do you think the Dems(and their transcript servivce, the MSM)played the slow response card so heavily. They know that will erode away as the other details come out. But now they will play that through the Roberts hearings–they didn’t have much there before. The will act like it’s there duty to be the opposition party to everything because of Bush’s lack of action/compassion…Not that they weren’t doing it anyway. They feel they landed body blows wuth the American public. But then they always feel that everyone agrees with them.

[...] A few days ago I linked to Big Pink Cookie who had the excellent idea of collecting knitted and crochet’d items for the little ones affected by Katrina. Christine has linked to a really cute, FREE, pattern for baby socks. [...]
