Blanco asked NO QUESTIONS about Katrina (UPDATED)

Hello?

Hello, RNC?

You remember last night, when you called my house and asked me to donate to the RNC? Remember how I very politely told you that the Republicans in the Senate and in the House were so spineless and ineffectual that - until things changed - they would be receiving no money from this household?

Remember how I pointed out that the GOP Senate’s pathetic, “please promise not to illegally look into our credit reports and we’ll be your friend” response to Chuck Schumer’s deplorable dirty tricks had disgusted me?

Well, I have to tell you, when I read the Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee agreed in advance not to ask poor, quivering, completely incompetent Gov. Kathleen Blanco any - that’s right - ANY, questions about her response to Hurricane Katrina (after, it must be said, some of those same GOP senators were pre-tty darn vicious to former FEMA head Brown), simply because she asked them not to - because, I guess, she needs time to construct whatever myth she deems necessary…well!

I can think of plenty of other good uses for my money than to support this nonsense. As a woman I am appalled at the kid-glove treatment of Gov. Blanco who makes all women in positions of power look bad. As a fairly new conservative, I just don’t understand. What gives? Is this still the “new tone?” Is there some brilliant strategy I am missing here?

I’m not suggesting anyone crucify the woman, but come on! You agreed not to ask her ANY questions about Katrina?

I only joined the GOP because I supported W, you know. The rest of you have been - with rare exceptions - spectacularly unimpressive.

I’m sorry…but you sit around day after day watching the opposition savage your party leadership and blame your president for every ill in the world, with the full complicity and assist of the press, and then - on two occasions in one week - you find yourself with LEGITIMATE (not spurious) reasons to do some serious jawboning with members of the opposition party, and you roll on your backs and pant, “please rub our bellies…”

My dog has more self-respect than that, and she is a notorious slave to the belly-scratch.

No…nope! You’ll have to convince me that there is something going on in the GOP besides a suicidal desire to be loved, before I can - in good conscience - send another dime of our hard-earned your way.

WELCOME: Michelle Malkin readers. While you’re here, please take a look around. Today, we’re also discussing Peggy Noonan’s utterly perfect piece on Katrina and America, my son Buster and his generational bliss, the startling reminder that Bull Connor was a Democrat, Cindy Sheehan’s statement that Casey’s insurance money is almost gone and we’re thinking about Archangels. Check back later - I’ll be linking to some interesting posts and stories about extreme pacifism and yet another exciting find in Jerusalem!

UPDATE: Reader Brian Day brings this to my attention at NRO’s The Corner Jonah, I thought the same thing as you about why Gov. Blanco got off so easy. But then it occurred to me that she was in front of the Senate Finance committee, asking for money to get on and rebuild, and not before the House committee that was investigating what went wrong. My theory — which may be wrong — is that the Finance committee offered her an invitation to make a brief statement in response to Michael Brown’s testimony as a professional courtesy, since it has been all over the news, rather than because they needed to reconstruct any timeline. And that she chose to focus her efforts on making a case for the finances Louisiana needs now, rather than muddying the waters, so to speak, with a rehash of the past — which she is saving for another time (I’m assuming she’ll have to eventually appear before the House committee.) Read the following in that light and see if that makes sense.

Hmph. Well. Sorta. Jimmie Bise has some thoughts on that.

;-)

Anchoress, you are the only of one of my usual bloggers who have hit on this, or have given it as much prominence as it deserves. Giving Blanco a pass…? What the “****” are they thinking? It seems like a dark, dark comedy if it wern’t actually happening. As reason escapes me, so does my alligance to ANY party, at this point. I predict much, much lower voter turnout than the last election. For all the reasons you mention, folks have just got to be turned off by what has become of “us”.

  2. Michelle Malkin Says:

    REPUBLICANS ROLL OVER…

…for Kathleen Blanco. Why? Because she asked them. The Anchoress is fuming. Ditto that….

  3. Julie D. Says:

This makes me extremely happy I have never officially joined any political party.

  4. Mr.Atos Says:

I came home from vacation to my contribution request from the RNC.

It’s in the trash. If Congressional Republicans wish to prostitute themselves to mainstream consensus, let them solicit that constituency for contributions.

  5. wrought Says:

Julie D., in my home state of FL, we are required to affiliate (register) ourselves with a particular party in order to be allowed to vote in our state’s primaries…registering as an independent would’nt afford me access to both parties primaries, but rather neither (from what I have been told)…given the choice of circumstances, I too would side with neither. Having such a binary system as we do in our mostly 2-party system, leaves many (myself included) with little appetite for choosing the lesser of 2 evils anymore…nothing ‘tastes’ the same anymore.

  6. Cathy Says:

I can’t begin to tell you how very angry I am about this travesty - what is the matter with these people???? I have never been so contemptuous of the Republican party as I am today. I throw up my hands in defeat. I give up. I am so sick and tired of having to battle the moonbats and MSM day after day after day. Do these Republicans have ANY idea why I voted for them??? My neutered 14 lb. dog is more tenacious than these politicians - hell, my stuffed toy cat has more moxie. I would like to see St. Michael do something in Congress - it would be so refreshing to see weak and spineless on the Republican side and the unabashed and brazen and evil on the Democrat side banished forever.

  7. Cathy Says:

OK - I already feel badly about my blast - sorry. It’s always darkest before the dawn - may the dawn come soon.

  8. KMaru Says:

My memory barely goes back this far, but wasn’t it once the case that Republicans were regarded as pit bulls and Democrats were too nice for their own good? To continue the dog psychology metaphor, isn’t it the dogs that are out of power or feeling cornered and irrelevant that lash out? As much as I agree with you that the GOP should press its advantage, there’s something inherent about having the demographic and geopolitical wind in one’s sails (broadly speaking) that leads to giving too much ground and being complacent. Of course that’s the seed of an eventual power reversal and then the cycle begins again the other way ’round.

  9. Bender B. Rodriguez Says:

How convenient for Gov. Blanco. Its not that she doesn’t want to address the issue of Katrina — after all, she has made all sorts of comments and statements criticizing everyone except herself, especially the federal government — its just that she’s only willing to comment when she is not under oath, when she is then free to distort the facts and is not required to tell the truth. All that the senators had to ask was, “Now that you are under oath, Governor, required to tell the truth under penalty of perjury, do you stand by those previous comments of yours denying Michael Brown’s accusations against you?”

Notwithstanding my previous comments elsewhere celebrating the Party of Lincoln, please understand dear Anchoress, that conservatives and the GOP ain’t necessarily the same animal. Frequently the GOP has followed and promoted the ideals of conservatives (or more accurately, at least in my case, classical liberal), but we must realize that the GOP proper is composed of those evil creatures known as politicians, and politicians, by their very nature, are not only elitist, but concerned more about retaining their power and privileges than about attaining the goals of the movement. Sure, they’ll dance once and a while with the folks what brought them, but they’ll run off as soon as they can to promote their favorite cause — themselves.
    .
But we shouldn’t confuse the conservative ideals with the public face of those ideals, politicians, any more than we should confuse the Catholic Faith with the some of the more wishy-washy bishops and priests.

  12. wrought Says:

Along with the fitting alagorical dance comments by Bender; I feel completely and utterly “used”, and nothing at all seems to fit right anymore…Maybe Forbes will run again. At least then I’ll really know who I’m dating :0)

  13. Julie D. Says:

Wrought, yikes! What a total bummer to be forced to pick one or the other. Our primary voting just stamps your voter’s registration card with whichever party’s name you voted in so you can’t slip over to the other one also. I never thought about that system before but am thankful for it now!

  14. DavidBlock Says:

This is sick. The GOP needs a serious dose of backbone.

  15. wrought Says:

On the update/explaination on the Blanco free-pass via the NRO post; sorry, that does’nt wash. If Brown is grilled in front of the finance commission, so must Blanco face the same music within the same context…regardless of other ongoing commissions, Brown was squarely placed on the hot seat regarding Katrina, with specificity! the same rules MUST apply to whomever appears in front of that very same commission if there is going to be even the slightest petina of objectivity or legitimacy. And to say Senators and Govenors are “colleagues” is like saying Freshmen and Seniors are classmates…2 different classes of public servants completely, but I’m feeling quite niave now about the accountability of those in power, no matter who they are; local, state or federal (local officials can be simply medival). The Finance Commission laying direct/targeted accountability on Brown’s doorstep, and then switching realities on Blanco’s behalf isn’t just schizo, it’s just plain wrong on too many levels. I voted in my very 1st election this past cycle, and it made me feel high. Now, I not only feel duped, but just plain stupid. My wife pays absolutley no attention to politics (or history), and in her ignorance (of those things) she is quite content and blissful…I guess it’s time we started looking for matching holes in the sand…

  16. The Anchoress » Captain Ed in WaPo on Miers Says:

[...] Rope-a-dope I say, still. I had thought President Bush had only the Democrats in his site, but after reading Robert Novak’s and Thomas Sowell’s assertions that the GOP told Bush they would not fight for the Owen or the Luttig, or the Rogers Brown, (which is not difficult to believe, considering the GOP agreed in advance not to ask Gov. Kathleen Blanco any questions about how her administration handled Hurricane Katrina) I wonder if Bush didn’t take a look at Harry Reid’s list and see Harriet’s name (probably included, btw, as a disrespectful lark) and thought…”okay…you gang-of-14 heros and you moderates don’t want to fight? I’ll bring old Harriet into this. Then, when Stevens steps down, and I try to name Luttig, let me see you say you will not fight…” [...]
