Quoting Harriet Miers

From her statement today:

“..I have always had a great respect and admiration for the genius that inspired our Constitution and our system of government..”-

“The wisdom of those who drafted our constitution and conceived our nation as functioning with three strong and independent branches have proven truly remarkable. It is the responsibility of every generation to be true to the founders’ vision of the proper role of the courts in our society. If confirmed, I recognize that I will have a tremendous responsibility to keep our judicial system strong, and to help ensure that the courts meet their obligations to strictly apply the laws and the Constitution.”

I’m still trying to figure out why the right is going nuts. I’ve come to the conclusion that people who are, admittedly, much smarter than I am tend to overthink these things, sometimes.

WELCOME: Bench Memo readers (and thanks to K-Lo for the link). While you’re here, please look around - today we’re also talking about my theory that the Miers nomination is another Bushian Rope-a-Dope, or that she might just be Derek Jeter in drag. We’re also looking at a testy little feud going on between CBS’s new blog and the blogosphere, another cool discovery in Jerusalem and we’re having fun making book recommendations for Christmas!

Ace has an open thread going. Some interesting comments.

So far, so good. All the grumbling is just part of the process. Was there any true concensus pick on the Right? Did you really expect Bush to send up Bork or Mark Levin? Or Ann Coulter? Oh, it would have been fun to watch! And I might have done it, but then again I’d never be President.

    “Consensus” ,of course.

I thought she looked more like Helen Thomas on slimfast (not very nice of me). I know nothing of her, but trust W.

Maybe she’s a decoy for them (the Dems) to boycott before he puts forth another capable woman? You must think as I that this nomination will not go through?

  4. TheAnchoress Says:

I have no idea whether this nomination will go thru or not.

Check out my latest post on the subject. Up there.

The Anchoress Defends The Miers Nomination

She did predict it, after all. She also notes that Miers says pretty much exactly what judiciary-conservatives want to hear most: I have always had a great respect and admiration for the genius that inspired our Constitution and our system…

I wrote at my own blog today that I am incensed and mystified over Bush’s nomination of Harriet Miers and gave my reasons for those reactions. In doing so, I didn’t feel as though I was going nuts, losing my marbles, or engaging in a form of mass hysteria among conservative Republicans (the so-called “Bush base” that is fast disappearing). Indeed, I regard myself as a level-headed thinker (except when my sons were teenagers). But I am sorely disappointed. I don’t know that I can be as prescient as you were, Anchoress, in correctly predicting her nomination, but my intuition tells me she’s not going to be the kind of strict constructionist that my hero Scalia is. I surmise this because my understanding is that Miers was raised a Catholic and in her adult years became a Christian Evangelist. So she has a much different interpretation of “… upon this rock (Peter), I will build my Church …” than I. She strikes me as more pragmatic and malleable in her beliefs than one might find in a strict constructionist. Regardless, Harry Reid likes her and if Ted Kennedy throws in with him in support of Miers than go ahead at that time and by all means label me “hysterical,” as I will be most assuredly!

  8. TheAnchoress Says:

Bernard- in my last post on Miers I make a point of admitting that the criticism of Miers is not unfair, nor of Bush…but that the extreme reaction that I have seen today from the right does seem excessive to me, and that my willingness to “wait and see” is not unfair, either.

You are never someone I would call hysterical…but much of the right HAS been unhinged and crazed today. :-)
