JUDGE EDITH ‘JOY’ CLEMENT
U.S. Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit, nominated by
G.W. Bush, 57 years old
So close last time! Clement was considered a
shoo-in to be the nominee till just a few hours
before Roberts was officially named. Few high
profile opinions, but considered a strict
constructionist.
New World Man presents: My favorite candidate for the Supreme Court
brought to you by Quizilla
Silly. I mean, when you think about it, the whole question of who is your “favored” judge based on 12 questions. Then again, Miers didn’t even get to answer 12 questions before she was treated rather badly by some. To the detriment, I fear, of us all.
Sorry, but I will never concede that because “Bush should never have nominated her,” that gave the right license to behave as badly as they did. There were ways to make credible arguments against Miers. Calling her the “cleaning lady,” or “Caligula’s horse” and calling the president “too stupid” to make a good nomination (!) and a “drunk”…those things were inexcusable. You cannot excuse them with a “Well, Bush shouldn’t have nominated her!” But enough about that. Final Harriet round-up: Alamo Nation, Maxed Out Mama, Hugh Hewitt.
If you take the test, you can see all 16 judges in the round-up. Funnily enough, if you put dark hair and tortoise shell glasses on Luttig, he looks remarkably like Al Franken!

I like Edith Jones. At least, that’s what the quiz says.
Given a choice right now, I’d rather have a slice and a corned beef sandwich.

Anchoress,
I think you may still be right on your idea that Bush nominated Miers as a fake. However, I’m sure he didn’t expect it to blow up the way it did.
Now, I like your post here, but I have to ask; why are you so shocked that the Republicans acted this way? This is the way they acted during the Clinton Presidency. They were brutal to the Clinton’s. Remember, during the Clinton years, Rush Limbaugh used to run ads for “The Clinton Chronicles.” And many other “respectable” people acted as if The Clinton Chronicles were not beyond the pale.
Accusing a sitting President of murdering 100’s of his friends is about as brutal as you can get.
But, of course, it’s not as bad as accusing a sitting President of being the equivalent of Hitler.

Heh. I got Edith Jones. Yes, it’s silly, but a welcome diversion…well, sort of a diversion.

What I really found, and still find, disingenuous about the anti-Miers is that they kept saying that Bush should have nominated X, Y, or Z, knowing full well, with their elite insider’s knowledge, that X, Y, and Z were all approached and said they did not want the job. It would be nice if they came out now and told us exactly which of the people they keep pushing have already said “no thanks” and taken themselves off the list. My understanding is that Clement is one of those that said she didn’t want it, and for all I know, JRB was one as well. One thing is sure, fewer good people today will be willing to endure the confirmation process, knowing that they are certain to get savaged from one side or the other.

My choice is Mary Ann Geldon.

I thought Miers should have the chance to defend and explain herself.
That said, I understand why many conservatives were troubled by her and I thought some people made legitimate arguments (obviously, not the people who were hurling nasty insights).
The whole debacle certainly was an unedifying and nasty one.
