From my sickbed, I have been reading Theodore Darlrymple’s latest exquisite book of essays, Our Culture, What’s Left of It, and I highly recommend it. It is no exaggeration to call him the Orwell of the 21st century.
I’m halfway through, and each essay is more impressive than the last. No one is writing O Tempora, O Mores better than he.
Which is why I am also linking you to this superb essay from Cato Unbound. You will thank me after you read it. You will also want to order the book, so I’ve made it easy for you!

Great essay! He makes me think of an older, graver, more polysyllabic Mark Steyn. (Would love to have the two of them over for dinner.) I ordered the book snd expect to love it. He also has some great stuff at city-journal.org
