South Park, Part II on cartoon wars

So? Did Comedy Central really censor the image of Mohammed in the “Family Guy” episode, or what? UPDATE: Yes, they did.

(Please note: Comedy Central is owned by Viacom, which also owns MTV, which is doing THIS. They are at least consistant in bravely mocking Catholics and Christians…who do not pose a threat to them.)

I thought the Al Qaeda “retaliation” cartoon was effectively dumb but meaningful. In a perfect world, terrorists and extremists would respond to offensive cartoons with offensive cartoons. The point was made to America by SP putting up a cartoon bound to offend various Americans - and any American who would rather not see “pooping” on the flag. Once again, they put the question out there - “what will you allow and what will you ban? And are you willing to fight for the First Amendment or just pay lip service to it until one of your sacred cows-or-icons are insulted?”

The point would have been more broadly made - and perhaps more clearly - had the “pooping” covered other various groups - a little poop on the press, perhaps (they didn’t make them look too good at the “press conference,”) on partisans of all stripe?

The “pooping” was designed, I’m sure, to see if some of the religious and right-winged folks who lionized the series last week (like me) would pop blood vessels this week - these Libertarian boys are still sly enough to make sure they push the right buttons! :-) But I think they didn’t give folks on the right, and some religious folk, enough credit. We’re not babies, and we don’t spend all of our time crying victim and carrying on about “hurtful” messages and “mean-spirited” words. That’s a different gang of folk. It’s not the folks on the right who shout down speakers invited to college campuses, or who throw pies and salad dressing on people with whom they disagree. It’s not the folks on the right who try to sneak into the medical records of others - it’s not the folks on the right trying to shut down those who vill not convorm to the “conventional visdom.” Conservatives are not the ones writing Condoleezza and watermelon questions on math tests.

Did they think we’d get all nuts about a cartoon Jesus “pooping” on Bush? Personally, their cartoon is much less offensive to me than the daily “pooping” the press and the left and the “experts” deliver to Christianity, President Bush and the nation in general. That stuff is doing real damage.

Btw, what happened to all the Americans with their heads in the sand? That wasn’t resolved?

All in all, pretty funny in some places, dumb in others - I really want to know if Comedy Central caved - the message was clear: either it’s all fair game, or nothing is, and to appease is to concede valuable liberties. I concur.

I’ll give it a B+. Couldn’t dance to it! :-) Ed Morrissey liked it a lot, too.

Buster was very unhappy with The Daily Show, though, and shut it off - “a big ‘Bash-Bush-Continually’ and not even witty” he said. He’s pretty much done with Jon Stewart, I think.

Muhammed turned the other cheek?.

From Volokh Conspiracy: UPDATE: As one of the comments below notes, Comedy Central apparently allows South Park to show Jesus defacating on others and being defacated on, but prohibits showing Mohammed “just standing there, looking normal.” Unfortunately, until Comedy Central or Matt Stone and Trey Parker make clear whether South Park was indeed censored, one can’t know for sure. The “play within a play” format renders things a tad uncertain.

Well, CC is a very liberal outfit, so it’s a good guess that pooping on Jesus, Bush and the flag is much less offensive to them than any PC consideration, or you know, the threat of violence by Muslim extremists. They KNOW they can pick on the rest without fear. How brave. How edgy of Comedy Central.

Still, I expected Stone and Parker wrote the piece, as aired, to chastise Comedy Central - who DID bow to the Scientology folks. I was wrong: The two parter was all about Comedy Central, itself, and its own cowardice.

“DO THE RIGHT THING! SHOW MOHAMMED!”

Everyone’s buzzing about last night’s South Park episode. It’s currently the #1 search term at Technorati. So, did Comedy Central censor Mohammed or not? Ed Morrissey and Jim Lindgren provide different views. Bottom line from The Anchoress: All in…

  4. Bender B. Rodriguez Says:

Consider what would have happened (what would still happen) if every media outlet in the West were to show pictures and drawings and cartoons of Mohammed, so as to stick it in their eye. Would the whole entire Muslim population rise up and destroy all of society? Or would it be limited to the same folks who went crazy when one place had the “audacity” to do it?
    .
I would venture to guess that the response would be not be much worse, except that they would now know that they cannot intimidate us, we will not cower and hide and cry.

  13. Bender B. Rodriguez Says:

I guess its been confirmed that CC did, in fact, censor the episode. That being the case, you can be sure they will regret that decision for a long time. CC needs South Park more than Stone and Parker need CC, and I would be surprised if they did not make CC’s execs lives hell from now on — or even quit doing shows altogether. After all, CC lost Dave Chappelle, perhaps for good.
