My dear brother-in-law, whom I have known for all of my life, left us today. In his last weeks, we have seen in his leave-taking all of the horror of my brother S’s death, and only some of the beauty. His passing was very quick, and he died at home, in his own bed, as he wished. I almost cannot believe he is gone, except that DH and I saw him only an hour before he died…and it was plain that tonight’s goodbye would be our last.
Please pray for my sister; she is exhausted beyond words and, of course, in deep grief. Today began badly and got worse - an exceedingly difficult day for her, and it ends with her watching the funeral director take her husband’s shockingly shrunken body from their house.
He was a very kind man, a rescuer of small animals, a hero to ignored children. Never sick a day in his life, and he seemed ageless, too - he simply never seemed to age. A prince of a man.
Now cracks a noble heart. Goodnight, sweet Prince.
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Oh Anchoress, I am so sorry for your loss. I’ve carried this poem with me for years- I’ll share it with you, and hope it provides some comfort.
“Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow; I am the diamond glints on the snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain; I am the gentle autumn’s rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there; I did not die.”
