July 8, 2006“You are not human to me,”Been out of the loop and don’t even know where to begin on this terrible incident. University of Arizona psychology professor Deborah Frisch wrote things no one should ever write - things that rational people would probably not even think - at Jeff Goldstein’s Protein Wisdom; now she is supposedly resigning her position. Why? Well, you can’t go over to Protein Wisdom to find out - Frisch’s supporters apparently have not one but two denial of service attacks underway against him in order to keep you from reading her. NOTE: He’s finally up and running, again. You can go over here, though, and see a few snippets of what she wrote to Goldstein about his 2-year-old son - it’s disgusting and disgraceful and altogether TOO MUCH. This sick writing is the stuff that makes you want to grab your beloved child and run for the hills. Beyond insinuating sexual things about the two year old and making “tell me where you live” noises, this woman wrote the most revealing thing about herself when she wrote these words: You are not human to me. [...] as I said elsewhere, if I woke up tomorrow and learned that someone else had shot you and your “tyke” it wouldn’t slow me down one iota. You aren’t “human” to me. You can see her victim-saturated, half-assed apology (those right wingers “TOLD ON ME!”) here. If you scroll down at her site, you see ruminations on hippies. Ah, yes. Peace! Love! Tolerance! Except for the people you decide are “not human!” Flopping Aces relates that this woman felt the need to do this because of mean things said about her by commenters at Goldstein’s site. By all means, the ADULT way to respond to ugly provocation is to turn it on someone’s kid. Right? What an excuse. And supposedly, if Jeff’s site ever comes back up, we’ll see that her charge is untrue. Can’t wait. Confederate Yankee - noting that yesterday several “progressive” bloggers were busy taking the right to task for “incivility - and he is wondering when or if any blogs from the left will give some heat to this woman or, at the very least, admonish her as you have seen right-wing bloggers do when one of their own crosses a line. So far, he doesn’t seem to have found any leftwing bloggers shaking the finger. Rick Moran is also looking for some condemnation from the left. He hears crickets. Meanwhile in his comments section Patterico finds one lefty blogger who is yawning about the whole thing. Ed Morrissey writes: I’ve had plenty of debate even with hard-Left bloggers and commenters without ever encountering anything like this. Namecalling is petty and childish, but it goes with the territory and immature people across the political spectrum engage in it. These threats have nothing to do with politics, and everything to do with intimidation, a kind of terrorism, in its way. No, “terrorism” is not too strong a word. Do you think Jeff read those words and did not feel terror strike at his heart? I know he must have felt it. Deborah Frisch crossed a whole bunch of lines. Truly, I hope she gets the help she seems to need. Her “apology” seems to me to contain very little regret and a whole-lotta “I can’t believe you people minded what I said…” which suggests to me that she really is not cognizant of what she has actually done as relates to talking about a parent to his child. And to those who are supporting her or trying to keep her words from being read: “Have you no decency. Finally, have you no decency?” And, her idea that ideological differences have* rendered the man and his child “not human,” that is something that should concern all of us. I know that there are extremists who engage in intemperate and out-there rhetoric on both sides. But this sort of thing should always be condemned, as should the childish name-calling (”moonbat,”) that both sides over-engage in. I cringe whenever I see writers on either side call Presidents by disgusting nicknames or call other writers “moonbats” and such. I wish everyone would knock it off and grow up a little. If humans cannot treat their fellow-humans with a common degree of humanity - and yes, decency - then this country will stagnate and die. Meanwhile Prof. Bainbridge has some history with this woman. Glenn Reynolds cautions that her apology may not really be hers. Good point. Let’s wait for some confirmation? Ace imagines one of her exams. Jeff at Musing Minds was there at PW when it all went down and shares his thoughts here. Happy Catholic has a very serious Christian response as she quotes from St. Augustine: It is the same with you: you see your enemy who opposes you, who overwhelms you with scathing words, who is harsh in his insults, who pursues you with his hatred. But you are attentive to the fact that he is a human being. You see everything that this person did against you, and you see in him that he was created by God. What he is as a human being is God’s work; the hatred he bears towards you is his own work. And what do you say to yourself? “Lord, be kind to him, forgive his sins, inspire him with fear of you, change him.” In this person, you do not love what he is, but what you want him to be. Thus, when you love your enemy, you love a brother. Thanks, Julie. Related: Cooper’s kids are alright. Are Rove’s? *Edited for clarity. Arizona psych professor threatens life of 2-year old child
Again I have to wonder about the mental state of our friends on the lefthand side of the sphere when people publish comments that move from insults to threats against children. Protein Wisdom’s site is down, but the comments have been preserved….

Somehow Goldstein has become a favorite of theirs to attack.
But the attacks do seem to be getting more prevalent and harsh. Does anyone actually know if the DOS is really related?

Seems to me that Left of Calvary just had a “clock moment” as well, finally agreeing with the Anchoress. Too bad the moment passed when the analogy to Ann Coulter began.
People thinking about writing a letter to her school should not take her word that she resigned, by the way.

[...] It’s the source of every sin. I used to think the source of sin was connected to vanity, pride and selfishness…but even those things are all about treating others as things, or even treating ourselves as mere things. We forget that we are created creatures, begotten - as in loved into being. In our exceedingly polarized world we increasingly lose sight of that, to the point where we cease to see each other as human beings at all - which always leads to bad stuff. Lots to think of here, and for me it’s wrapping itself up in Advent, in the idea of the bridegroom and the concept of covenant - all stuff that’s rattling around in my still-unquiet brain (I think I need to go on retreat - can’t get quiet, and I need to). It’s all stuff I mean to write about, as soon as I can put it together. [...]
