EMBRYONIC Stem Cells, EMBRYONIC - UPDATED

UPDATES:::SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATES:::

It never fails that when the press discusses things like President Bush vetoing this bill, they leave out the word EMBRYONIC. (Note: See update, below)

They want the world to think that Bush is a “Christian who is afraid of science,” and so they always discreetly forget the EMBRYONIC part, leaving casual readers to think the president is against adult stem cell research, in general…which is not at all true.

It is an intellectual dishonesty the press is committed to. And they never tell you about the experiments on Parkinson’s disease patients which had such horrific results that the research was stopped. Not just postphoned, but stopped. (see update)

That research, which I wish I’d put into my hard drive, made me believe that Embryonic stem cells are like uncut heroin…waaaay, way to powerful to use - they are part of begotten life in its purest form (perhaps still too near to God for our fooling with) - and they are so maleable as to be (so far in research) unpredictable and unusable. And that’s not even getting into the moral and ethical questions of whether or not a human embryo should be exploited in such a way, particularly when Adult Stem Cells are showing remarkable results in everything from helping sufferers of Sickle Cell Anemia and Thallassemias Major and Minor, to spinal injuries, skin regeneration and more.

The other intellectual dishonesty the press indulges in, is neglecting to mention that nothing the president has done will stop PRIVATE funding of such research.

I’m sure I’ll hear, “Anchoress, you’re so mean! What about if someone can be cured of diabetes thanks to Embryonic research?” Really? Is it worth it? As I wrote here, we’ve lost touch with the idea that maybe we’re supposed to play a hand we’re dealt and grow from it. We don’t want to know, anymore, from suffering. Which means we don’t want reality in our lives. I think John Paul II was zreally trying to teach that to us, in his later years. Contrary to the collective wisdom, there is power in, and value to, suffering. It actually may be more important to “be” than to “do.”

And I say that as a woman dealing with a chronic blood illness, and waiting to hear - finally - about a diagnosis that has taken a great deal of time to pinpoint. Both health issues are being looked into with ADULT stem cells, and that’s good news…I wouldn’t want any treatment derived from EMBRYONIC stem cells.

Given the choice, I’ll take the harder road, and keep faith with the Creator. If you think I’m a fool, then so be it, I’ll be a fool. I won’t live my life at the expense of a life not allowed to live. Maybe - as this 16 year old has figured out, the time I get is all the time I’m supposed to have.

To me, it speaks volumes that the proponants of ESC research, in the press and elsewhere, are so willing to mischaracterize moments like these. Seems to me if you cannot be upfront about the thing you want, if you need to dance around it, then there must be a reason why. Maybe it’s because you know the thing you want, you probably shouldn’t want.

And btw, President Bush says he was “honor bound,” to veto this bill. Good for him. “Honor” has become a remarkably rare commodity in politics. When I look at the world and the state of it, I believe this will be for us a blessing.

Attending the White House event were a group of families with children who were born from “adopted” frozen embryos that had been left unused at fertility clinics.

“These boys and girls are not spare parts,” he said of the children in the audience. “They remind us of what is lost when embryos are destroyed in the name of research. They remind us that we all begin our lives as a small collection of cells.”

The measure, which the House of Representatives passed in May 2005, allows couples who have had embryos frozen for fertility treatments to donate them to researchers rather than let them be destroyed.

Bush said, “If this bill were to become law, American taxpayers would, for the first time in our history, be compelled to fund the deliberate destruction of human embryos, and I’m not going to allow it.”

Good for you, Mr. President. No wonder they hate you so much. Glad you’re willing to endure it.

Ed Morrissey has a well-done post on this story. Among other points he makes: The lack of private investment in this procedure tells volumes about its value. Yup.

Also, Read Francis Porretto on this subject and others; he’s put up a very good post!

1) The Headline of the article to which I linked in the first paragraph has apparently been changed. When I linked to it, the headline read: White House: Bush ‘honor-bound’ to block stem cells bill. It now reads: Bush vetoes embryonic stem-cell bill, a change for the better. Evidence for you doubters: see this thread’s headline vs current header! Thanks to my lefty e-mailers - and these folks, who were having some fun at my expense, for pointing it out! :-)

2) Thanks to Sheridan, who has located those pieces on ESC research into Parkinson’s Disease, and the “nightmare-ish” results that have occured. Note her remark that she could not find certain things in the NY Times archives.

- New England Journal of Medicine, “Transplantation of Embryonic Dopamine Neurons for Severe Parkinson’s Disease”

- LifeSite, “CURRENT STATUS OF ADULT AND EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH”

Footnote 6 of this article referenced an article in the New York Times by Gina Kolata titled “Parkinson’s Stem Cell Implants Yield Nightmarish Side Effects”. I cannot find it in the NYT archives, however. Curious that! I did find it here though.

It certainly IS interesting, the stuff that disappears from the NY Times archives, isn’t it?

I’ve had the same discussion about embryonic vs. adult stem cells myself. And thrown in the idea that IF there were beaucoup bucks to be made from ESC research, some venture capitalist (or three) would be throwing money at it.

But they’re not. What does that tell you?

I love the line “These boys & girls are not spare parts.” And the one about American taxpayers being compelled to pay for the deliberate destruction of human life. Cindy Sheehan should support that!

Dear Anchoress: My 18 year old has chronic lupus nephritis. We were discussing this issue a few months ago, in light of some of the new treatment for lupus. She is adamant that she does not support embryonic stem cell research, even if it meant a cure for her illness because “I couldn’t live with myself, knowing that another human being died so that I could live”. When I told this to my sister, who has Parkinson’s disease and who is SO angry that Bush would be against this kind of research, she could not say anything in reply. And, BTW, I’ve been praying for you to finally receive a diagnosis for your condition. God bless you.

Just as I finished reading this marvelous post by The Anchoress, I received a phone call from a young woman whom I protected from child abuse when she was nine. She is now a student at the University of Arizona. She asked, What are you doing? So, I told her. Right away she told me she knew about the Presidential veto, which she called “stupid.” I recited the facts I had just read, and she was speechless.

Then, I asked if she knew about the U. of A. psychology professor who recently submitted her resignation after being exposed on the web. She knew about it, but only what she read in a local paper. Based on what she had read, she thought the professor should not have resigned. I then told her what I had read that the professor had actually said, which was far more than the Jon Benet quote that Tucson paper had mentioned. Once again, she lost some of her previously formed strong opinion.

See what one can accomplish by checking in with the Anchoress every day?

The comparison of embryonic stem cells to uncut heroin is an interesting one. I have read about experiments with embryonic stem cells where they behaved almost like a cancer.

I am all for research and don’t want to be the 21st century equivalent of those doctors who thought that using cloroform to blunt the pain of childbirth was going against the will of God, but there is something about experimenting on embryos that chills me.

Are the Democrats (and the Left in general) on a Quota System when it comes to killing embryos? You think they would have learned to eliminate “piece work” from their union buddies.

The real question for voters is “Why are YOU, as Taxpayers, so HELLBENT to pay for research that will put $Billions into the pockets of big drug companies should it ever succeed? RESEARCH they are FREE to do on their own RIGHT NOW!! AND THEY HAVE BEEN SINCE 2001….. Why aren’t we hammering home that point every time we speak?

I notice the Dems aren’t pointing to South Korea this time around. Oh, that’s because it WAS ALL FAKED. But then again, so are their Global Warming arguments. The MSM should be hanging their heads in shame right now. If you can’t even inform the public with basic information, you are useless!

    Go for it, Mr. Prez!

If our Congress wants to fund stem-cell research, let them pour our money into ADULT stem-cell research. I have a very good friend who was in a situation that is all too common these days: A healthy man suddenly feels ill, goes to a doctor, and is told he has terminal cancer. With only months to live, he agreed to the transplantation of HIS OWN stem cells, taken from his marrow. Within days, the cancer began to recede; six years later, he is living a normal life, with absolutely no signs that he was ever ill. From terminal cancer to COMPLETELY CURED, with no side effects. For that, you can spend my tax dollar any day!
