Reuters jumps the shark?

I don’t know. The blogosphere is certainly swarming (and with ample justification) around the myriad pieces of evidence which suggest that Reuters is - at best - egregiously sloppy and - at worst - destructively deceitful. There is stuff everywhere, so much so it’s hard to keep up, so I’m simply going to link to what I’ve seen and you can check it all out.

Start with this NBC-affiliated reporter who is saying, “don’t believe the reportage on the war - a remarkable statement. (H/T Ed Morrissey) This fellow, Ike Seamans, who has an impressive bio, btw, writes:

As a veteran journalist who has been in countless war zones around the world (especially the Middle East) as an NBC network correspondent, it pains me to see what passes for accurate coverage in the early stages of a conflict like the one between Israel and Hezbollah. [emphasis added]
[...]
In the case of Beirut and other parts of Lebanon under the control of terrorists, Hezbollah usually runs daily press tours, making sure reporters and photographers see the worse that Israel has inflicted — killing civilians, etc. — in order to slate the coverage, but never reveals that Hezbollah uses private homes, mosques, schools, hospitals and other public buildings for their headquarters or to launch their lethal missiles.
[...]
Best advice. Reporting has been so inconsistent, if you really want to know what is going on, check out all the networks — broadcast and cable — as well as print sources and the Internet. Otherwise, you will never know if you are getting the straight scoop on the confusing Israeli-Hezbolla imbroglio. [emphasis mine]

One of my journo pals mentioned yesterday that in reportage, these days, it’s “the first story out gets the play, and Hezbo has been getting the first story out.” Which is probably accurate but not excusable. It’s difficult in an age of instant information, but for that reason, it is imperative that news outlets - if they want to maintain their credibility and not find themselves being used as nothing more than funnels for propagandists - double and triple check the stories they’re going with. Now more than ever, they really need to get on top of this stuff. Now to the links!

    Great link roundup.

The Reuters story is symptomatic, as the Ike Seaman’s piece makes clear.

Until journalists and media outlets do what they are supposed to do- report the news in context, with no agenda, we will be subjected to more media drivel.

Reuters Jumped the Shark long ago. Jumped it, fell in the water, and was swallowed whole.

    The shark died.
