October 10, 2006Movies and videos, Religion and PoliticsMy Li’l Bro Thom sent this to me: Folks have real jobs. “God bless,” they say when parting. Outside of church productions, no one in the congregation had acting or writing or directing credits. Yet three summers ago, a small group of churchgoers in this city of pecan groves and industrial plants believed that God wanted them to make a movie. They prayed every day to create a drama truer to the Gospels than the usual multiplex trash. Now, “Facing the Giants,” the low-budget feature film about faith and high school football they made with church donations and Bible-inspired moxie, is playing at more than 400 theaters around the country — a gigantic release for any independent movie, let alone one created by near-novices. The movie has made $2.7 million in 10 days, and ticket sales were good enough last weekend to place it 13th in the box office rankings, one notch below “Flyboys,” a war movie with a $60 million budget and starring James Franco. Interesting. Has anyone seen it? I missed The Illusionist before it left the theatres and part of me wants to see the new Jack Nicholson film but the other part of me is saying, (shrug) “if I miss it, I’ll live…” I happen to think this video from Move America Forward is a bit much, too. The point is a sound one, but it’s way over the top, also, and not as amusing as Zucker’s…and it seems just a little too “ALL MUSLIMS ARE TERRORISTS” for me. That’s just my taste, though. Mac’s Mind relates that Google/YouTube doesn’t mind if you have a video up threatening to kill the president, or anything like that. But if you are Michelle Malkin, you are not welcome! Some of the comments by the people happy to watch the assassination of the American President are hair-raising. Some are simply pathetic. On the religion front, things are getting a bit dicey for the Church of England and they’re blaming the government for it. A perfect storm is brewing, perhaps? I dunno…the C of E has been imploding for years…it’s nice to have a finger to point elsewhere, but they need to look internally (and interiorly) perhaps, to really find the source of their troubles (just as the Catholics do, too). Finally, politically, Thomas Sowell decries the most frivolous campaign season in my memory. Bless him, he gets right down to it: That question also needs to be asked about the media. In these grim and foreboding times, our media have this year spent incredible amounts of time on a hunting accident involving Vice President Cheney, a bogus claim that the administration revealed Valerie Plame’s identity as a C.I.A. “agent” — actually a desk job in Virginia — and is now going ballistic over a Congressman who sent raunchy e-mails to Congressional pages. This is the frivolous media — and the biased media. Republican Congressman Foley was wrong and is out on his ear. But Democrats in both Congress and the White House have gone far beyond words with a page and an intern. Yet the Democrats did not resign and Bill Clinton’s perjury, obstruction of justice, and suborning of perjury by others were treated as if these were irrelevant private matters. Even when serious issues are addressed, they can be addressed either seriously or frivolously. If you are content to see life and death issues of war and peace addressed with catch phrases like “chicken hawk” or to see a coalition of nations around the world fighting terrorism referred to as “unilateral” U.S. action because France does not go along, then you are content with frivolity. You may deserve whatever you get if you vote frivolously in this year’s election. But surely the next generation, which has no vote, deserves better. Read the whole thing! Oh, and the Dow ended up setting another record, but the economy is bad, there is no one to credit for any good news seeping out, and if only a Dem were in the WH, this would be the lede on every broadcast tonight. http://theanchoressonline.com/2006/10/10/movies-and-videos-religion-and-politics/trackback/ 5 Responses to “Movies and videos, Religion and Politics” |

No, don’t watch the new Jack Nicholson film. Watch the movie it was ripped off from, Infernal Affairs (a Hong Kong movie). So wonderful!

Hey Anchoress, the spouse and I saw the movie Departed, which I wouldn’t exactly call a Jack Nicholson movie, but I think that might be the one you mentioned. We both thought the acting was fantastic by all involved. It was worth the price of admission.
