I’m not really sure what it means…it’s a nautical term, I believe, meaning I have command of a ship, or the helm?
Ed Morrissey has handed over control of Captains Quarters Blog to yours truly until sometime Sunday. I feel a little like Commander Riker being being handed the bridge while Picard goes to the ready room…or whatever that thingy was.
The big questions, of course, are 1) can I figure out the logging in process over there and 2) can I manage to (at least) approach the caliber of Ed’s work (or at least not embarrass him too badly). And I think the answer to both question is…no, hell, no. I’m nervous!
But I’m also very thrilled and flattered to be asked by Ed to do some guest posting for him while he and his First Mate go help engaged couples find their sea-legs on an Engaged Encounter Weekend. Ed is my first and favorite Blogfather, a first-rate writer and researcher, even-handed and generous. He’s also very kind. I hope I can do well by him.
In other words, I have very big shoes to keep moving.
I will likely be cross-posting between both blogs, particularly if I write anything halfway decent. But if you’re new to The Anchoress and would like to get a sense of what I’m about, here are some blasts from the past:

Preferred spelling is “con” with one (1) “n.” Position for steering a vessel (traditional). Position and duty of steering a starship (Trekkie).

Uh oh…I was not Navy (USAF here) but I believe the term is “Comm” and not “Conn” since the skipper hands over the “Command” of the ship and not “Connetticut.”

I was Air Force rather than Navy, but isn’t the correct term “the Comm” as in the Command? Otherwise it looks like you have Connecticut - not a bad thing, tho.

Outstanding !
I can tease the Captain now, that suddenly his blog makes so much more sense…
hehehehhe
By the way, you may wish to see the Barron’s forecast, which will upset many doom-gloomers and Nancy Pelosi.
JUBILANT DEMOCRATS SHOULD RECONSIDER their order for confetti and noisemakers. The Democrats, as widely reported, are expecting GOP-weary voters to flock to the polls in two weeks and hand them control of the House for the first time in 12 years — and perhaps the Senate, as well. Even some Republicans privately confess that they are anticipating the election-day equivalent of Little Big Horn. Pardon our hubris, but we just don’t see it.”

Well, I was a Sea Going JG Badger, and the actual term, is that she “Has the Deck”. The Officer of the Deck, or OOD, has operational control of a ship, when the CO is not on the bridge.
