Tony Snow missed his opportunity

I like Tony Snow a lot and think he’s the perfect fella for the WH Press Sec’y job at this time.

But he’s too nice. And yesterday he blew an opportunity. He was asked whether the timing of the Saddam verdict was manipulated by the WH.

He actually answered the thing respectfully.

To my way of thinking, that question deserved a look of stunned incredulity followed by a statement along these lines:

“Do you even realize how paranoid that sounds? Do you realize that in five years you haven’t been able to report on positive news produced on this president’s watch without first sullying it with partisan and political spin - spin that immediately throws more poison into what has become the toxic swamp of American politics? Do you realize that even when you are reporting good news, whether it be on the economy or the war in Iraq or this historic trial, you cannot allow yourself to be fair to this president, or to report the story without making it sound like he is tying America to train tracks and twirling a mustache? Do you realize what that makes you, what it has done to your profession? Do you see what it is doing to this country? You don’t have to love anything the president does, but there is a time to be fair…when is that time, in your estimation? When does Bush get a fair shake by you? If he finds Osama, well, he’s had him hidden all this time, anyway, right? If the unemployment rate goes down to 4.4 that can only mean layoffs ahead, right? Is that how you want your work to be regarded, as nothing but negative, all the time?”

It’s a dream, I know, and Snow is too good a man to do that. But I’d do it. Which is why I am not the WH Press Sec’y and no one in his right mind would ever put me in that position. Or, you know…in any public position! :-)

Too good a man to tell the truth?

The problem here is that any display of anger (or disdain for the press) by a Republican is manipulated — by the press — into an argument that “the administration and its spokesmen can’t stay cool when necessary.” Temper, temper! To display emotion is always unacceptable in a public servant, right? I mean, what if the president were to take umbrage at some triviality — say, the slaughter of 3000 of our citizens — and order an invasion out of sheer pique? Can’t have that, can we?

    BALDERDASH!

At some point, the unwillingness to show that you’ve been angered and are ready to lash out becomes a weapon against you. The press, which is almost uniformly left-leaning, has wielded it against Republican officeholders for more than three decades. Yet their forbearance for displays of emotion or temper from their preferred “statesmen” is nigh unlimited. Need I mention Bill Clinton, he of the red face and wagging finger?

God gave us the capacity for anger because there are times when it’s both right and necessary — like every other attribute of Man. The Republicans need to relearn that.

[...] I think The Anchoress should run for public office, something big and visible, like President of the Federation or something, regardless of what she thinks. Boy, she’d kick some a$$ and take some names, wouldn’t she? [...]

some times i feel many Conservatives are so polite, nice, restrained, they encourage the unethical opposition to take advantage of them…

I think your statement should be sent to all the MSM outlets. The truth hurts, and they need to know the truth!
