November 8, 2006A few Random Thoughts…Okay, yeah, I keep saying I’m going to buckle down and work on my project, and I really, really am. Just need to clear my mind of a few thoughts, so I can work! Should Cheney Go Too? Jules Crittenden writes yes and says: Cheney is about the past. The next two years are about November 2008. With Bush already in lame-duck territory, it is past time to think about legacy, about leaving America in a position to keep fighting when he is gone. Personally, I think President Bush has made two serious strategic errors in his presidency. 1): Bush should have done a more thorough housecleaning when he took office - he left too many media-palsy Clintonistas in positions of influence when he came in. (What was the first thing Hillary said when she got into the WH the first time? “We need to get their people out and our people in…” If nothing else, that woman is clear about keeping her flank covered.) 2): He should have considered asking for the resignations of Rumsfeld and Cheney when he had the political capital to replace them with his own first-tier selections. This is not a criticism of Rumsfeld or Cheney per se, but doing so would have brought some movement regarding Iraq, which had seemed to become stagnant; removing Rumsfeld earlier would have signaled a willingness to try different tactics when things got rough, too. Ed Morrissey does not like the timing of this at all. Instead, at this point - as Austin Bay says - Rumsfeld becomes a scalp. I am not too worried - right now - about the troops. I think as long as Bush is president, he will not allow them to be reduced in number and turned into target practice for Al Queda. But I worry about their welfare when Bush leaves office. As far as moving Cheney out, I think President Bush’s thinking was was “win in ‘06 and then move out Cheney for the presumptive heir…” He waited too long to make that move. Now, instead of looking like strategy, coming from a position of strength, it will look like capitulation…if, indeed, he makes that move at all. Meanwhile all of President Bush’s movement today is certainly stealing a few headlines from Pelosi and the Dems, isn’t it? Hastert is Out: I’m already feeling happier. I dread Pelosi and Reid, but Hastert did the GOP no favors these past few years. Impeachment: I said here that I had no doubt the Dems will try it. Would only add that impeaching Clinton hurt the right, and I think impeaching Bush will hurt the left. I think America wants some seriousness, not an endless game of Impeachment Tag. But the Dems may be too far gone to hear it. Prayer: Don’t feel like prayin’? Too bad. Today is a good day to pray for the president, the troops and the incoming houses. It’s productive. Do it. GOP bloggers are classy in defeat: Bulldog and Jim Addison have even offered the left gloating threads. I have never SEEN such a thing on a lefty blog. From what I can see most conservative bloggers are being magnanimous and thoughtful in defeat. We’re not seeing them call the rest of the country “retarded,” or whining that they need to move to Canada. Grown ups. Cool. I’m a bitch?: Someone emailed me about the Mephistopheles post calling me a bitch, and I couldn’t really tell if he/she was from the right or the left, but I have one thing to say to him/her: Hey, you don’t like that I post opera and reference cartoons? Then bite me, honey, and go read someone else…or start your own blog! I might even post a nice picture of Derek Jeter later today, just because I can! When do they announce the MVP’s anyway? CNN’s Blogger Party: Kind of a bust, wasn’t it? It seemed like the participating bloggers, being corralled together, were distracted and not really able to blog with their usual insight - there was a lack of focus that affected both quality and quantity. I found the only blogger I was following was Betsy Newmark. What does it mean? Perhaps only that blogging is not really a communal activity - that like hairbrush singing and air-guitar playing, it is best done alone. Cream Biscuits: Ah, dear Lord, these sound delicious. And now I really am going to get to work on that project. If you like, you can listen to these two soldiers singing The Pearlfisher Duet in an Army Concert. http://theanchoressonline.com/2006/11/08/a-few-random-thoughts/trackback/ 13 Responses to “A few Random Thoughts…” |

Anchoress hang in there I really appreciate your retort to someone calling you a “Bitch.” I appreciate your blog for so many reasons and not the least of them is your willingness to tell it like it is. I don’t always agree with everything you write but hey it is your blog and at least I have to think instead of just being a mindless follower. Again hang in there and get well.

I agree with Kbob. It’s your own blog and if that person don’t like what they see, then they can create their own blog.

Not a good day. I solaced myself by running errands downtown (I’m in Chicago, and the Loop is actually a good place to go when you need to be alone) had lunch at a Russian restaurant and read “The New Criterion” throughout lunch - articles on John Dryden and Winston Churchill.
BTW I’ve got that same cream-biscuit recipe (via Cook’s Illustrated, which gave full credit to James Beard). I don’t use the butter either: not necessary. In fact I’m making them tonight.

I like the Opera blogging and the cartoons. I was playing Ride of the Valkeries in the car (Telmark instrumental only version) when picking my son up after a soccer game. He didn’t like it, till I told him the words….
“I want to play soccer! I want to play soccer!…. and score a goal!”
Wagner suddenly made sense to him.
Your blog is one of few I have bookmarked.

If the cream biscuits are half as good as the baked oatmeal recipe from a few weeks ago, they will be delicious! I’m glad you’ve enjoyed hearing the soldiers sing the Pearlfishers Duet ~ it’s one of my favorite performances, too!

Anchoress not to pick on you but your post about if Cheney should go or if Bush should have asked Cheney for him to resign is sort of typical of comments I have been seeing
I think its important to remember that Cheney is not like the Secretary of Defense or Labor. His office is mandated by the Const and yes we actually voted for him. Therefore I think it would be improper and very bad precedent for Bush to ask that short of Criminal wrong doing.
Also people sometimes make their choice for President based on whom the running mate. I know many democrats that voted for Kerry because he had Edwards on the ticket.
Anywho I feel better now

Anchoress as a general rule I agree with you, but Bush does not have the authority to ask for Cheney’s resignation. Chney wass elected to office, he is not Bush’s peon.
Once upon a time the VP was the guy who got the second most votes and while that has changed, the fact that he is elected has not.
Rumsfeld on the other hand is appointed. I think that maybe Rumsfeld wanted to go, he is an old man and I think he is getting tired.

ACLU Applauds Rumsfeld’s Resignation, Calls for Immediate Investigation Into Dereliction of Duty
Off we go into a new direction for America. You know we are off on the wrong foot towards the wrong direction when the changes taking place are cheered by the ACLU! If President Bush thinks nixing Rumsfeld is a way to finding common ground with the …

Rumsfeld has a home on the outskirts of a beautiful town. I’ve been to the town the past two years, and wouldn’t mind resigning to a place like that. Rumsfeld didn’t need to take the job with Bush. He could have kicked back. I know there are those who wish he would have. I think we are the better for his service.

If the ACLU is for it, I’m agin it. They are the most dangerous of the anti-American leftwing lunatic organizations. Didn’t used to be that way, but they have been taken over by the tinfoil hat wearers with law degrees!

I read a post by a blogger some where, saying Tuesday was about moderation. She said that the “Moderate” middle was tired of the extremes of both parties and voted for moderation.
Well, I’m sure she feels better about the ACLU now, but I did hear that Conyers said “Impeachement” was off the table.
We’ll, see how long the new moderate Democrates last.

Super-secret transcript from NSA Surveillance
You can’t breathe a word of this to anyone, but we’ve gotten our hands on another transcript from the NSA terrorist surveillance program. Shhhhhh… let’s listen in…
