December 30, 2006Saddam Dead - Dearborn DancesI would have illustrated this with a photo of it, but I can’t find any. Apparently the Iraqi-American community is dancing in Dearborn. UPDATE: Clarity and Resolve has found a picture. CNN links to video here. “Peace,” he said, grinning and laughing. “Now there will be peace for my family.” Alwatan, 32, said Saddam’s forces tortured and killed relatives that were left behind when Alwatan left Quote from President Bush: “It is a testament to the Iraqi people’s resolve to move forward after decades of oppression that, despite his terrible crimes against his own people, Saddam Hussein received a fair trial. It is an important milestone on Iraq’s course to becoming a democracy that can govern, sustain, and defend itself.” I’d say that’s probably correct. This something Iraq has done on its own, before the world, and it emphasizes their fledgling sovereignty. It might - might - help them. Sensible Mom notes that CBS, which did not cut into programming to mark the death of Gerald Ford, did manage to do so for Saddam’s death. One wonders if Harry Reid, also disinterested in the death of a former GOP president, will comment on Saddam’s death. Radio Equalizer has the reaction from the Bush-obsessed on the left. They’re thinking a sovereign nation like Iraq (or the US) has no business charting its own course and should have remanded Hussein to the International Criminal Court. Right. The Bush-obsessed - who cannot process any information at all except through the prism of their BDS, are foaming over all this. There line - essentially - goes like this: “Well, yeah, okay, Hussein was bad but he should have been tried by the International Court - not his own countrymen - and Bush, who is AT LEAST AS BAD IF NOT WORSE than poor old Saddam, should be hanging with him.” Alrighty, then. As I said earlier, one wonders what their reaction would be if only a president Clinton or Gore or Kerry were the president behind Saddam’s capture, trial and sentencing. I think there’s a good bet they’d be talking about a nation’s right to its own laws…and how just it all is. If this does not demonstrate how utterly owned they are by their own hate, I wonder what will. Just think, if only President Clinton had gone after Saddam back when he tried to assassinate Bush 41 - had he responded decisively to that clear act of war - the world might be an incredibly different place right now. Ah, well. Gay Patriot notes that some on the left are - predictably - calling for the execution of George W. Bush. Ed Driscoll has a terrific round-up of not-seen everywhere links. Confederate Yankee has more from the Bush-obsessed and also notes that he’s been more accurate than the MSM regarding the timing of when it went down. Scroll down. Jules Crittenden has reactions from left and right. Hot Air has a fine round-up, the “quote of the year,” and collection of stories. As does The Moderate Voice. Tammy Bruce links to a scathing obit for Saddam from The Times of London. They still manage to bash Bush, but they’re not crying for Saddam. Gateway Pundit has updates and a stirring visual recap with lots of pics, remembrances and recaps. Less graphic than Flopping Aces’ live thread, which is not for everyone. Curt finishes off with some interesting video from CNN. PJM’s Editor in Seattle notes that for a lameduck President Bush dominated the 2006 news in one way or another - even into its last days. They’ve also got a running roundup on all this. And now the blogs, left and right, watch each other respond. An emailer wrote to say that Anderson Cooper has been impressive - repeatedly stating that Saddam was a tyrant and that the Iraqi people would not be free of him were it not for coalition troops. “He seems to understand how big this is, that’s it’s bigger than hating Bush.” Well, that’s something, I guess. History was made today. We all watched the news as many of our fellow Americans did today. I share your feelings about having someone put to death. Yet, in this case like the dictators before him, the world will be a better place without him.
No one should have that much power over other human beings to torture and kill at his every comment. Only God can judge now what lies ahead for this man, Saddam Hussein.

these kooks really believe GW Bush should hang?
it is amazing, and truly sad…
even more fascinating, watching Russert, Couric, etc., try to downplay Saddam being dealt some justice from his own people, who are now free.

I think the Dearborn celebraters have a point. This is the world asserting sanity; Saddam Hussein was one of the worst characters in a rather troubled world. May God have mercy on his soul; man showed all he could to this person who lived an animalistic life.

[...] That’s a bit more like it as far as I’m concerned. Taking a quick spin around the sane side of the Blogosphere I see that The Anchoress points out that there was Dancing in Dearborn over the death of Saddam. And, as usual, Captain Ed brings an intelligent focus to an important event: The dictator has met his end, at the hands of the people he tormented for decades. He received more justice in a single day of his trial than he ever gave anyone during his reign of terror. Yet the American media covered that trial as if it were the Saddam show, rather than provide coverage of the many witnesses to his genocides and crimes against humanity. This was the most consequential and historic trial of a mass murderer since Nuremberg, and the only points of interest to the American media were the self-serving disruptions of the defendants — and they questioned the fairness of the trial because the monsters tried turning the trial into a circus. It is truly sad that anyone would celebrate and dance for joy at the death of anyone, even for the most depraved and wicked of men. Even though this was necessary and justified it saddens me at the response of people. I feel it should be a solemn and thought provoking time. perhaps a time to say there are standards of behavior that must be followed by everyone if peace and civility is to exist, rules that must be followed to ensure that life is kept sacred. to wontly violate the rules in such a way will bring dire consequences maybe even the forfieture of your own life. It is sad, so very sad that this had to be. sometimes it is necessary so show the world what is important so as to keep others from following in their depraved way. May God have mercy on his soul and on the souls of all who are so consumed with hate.

Did the Vatican condemn Hitler’s suicide?

I think Sensible Mom’s point –that Saddam’s death has gotten more ink than Gerald Ford’s– is mistaken. I just put on the TV and all the channels are full of Ford and Saddam coverage equally. But I, for one, would prefer the balance tilt toward Saddam. Ford, like it or not, is now a historical footnote. It’s nice to have the retrospectives of his life and presidency, but that’s all they are… nostalgic backward glances.
Saddam is still a current figure. His life and death are key elements of the major events in US history for the past twenty years. It is deeply interesting to speculate about the short- and long-term futures of Iraq in his wake.
Saddam at this historical moment is a more relevant figure than Ford.

Radio Equalizer’s nervous rant about leftists wanting to send Saddam to the ICC is a hoot. I haven’t heard anyone make that comment. I suppose if one lifts every rock in every blog, you can find someone somewhere who suggests Saddam should go before the ICC, but Radio’s rib-tickling notion that this idea has somehow been embraced by “the left” (whatever that is), as though millions and millions of Americans have seized on this idea, is just absurd. But setting up straw men and then wasting time knocking them down is how “the right” lost the elections, so I encourage Radio to keep at it. Hey, just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean nobody is after you !
