Camelot, Child Art and Spinning

Camelot is not my favorite show, but in this clip one Welshman has a turn at King Arthur’s musings, first uttered by another Welshman, Richard Burton. C’mon, that accent is very endearing.

Speaking of art, and it’s all I’m speaking of right now, a reader sent this link to the paintings of a kid with a remarkable talent for portraiture. I don’t think I really like her art much, as a whole, but several of these pieces are stunning, in particular “The Planted Eyes” and “Prince of Peace,” a portrait that reminds me quite a lot, upon contemplation, of the image on the Shroud of Turin.

Prince of Peace, by Akiane

Both of them were supposedly done when she was 8 years old. That’s breathtaking.

No, I still don’t feel like writing. Maybe it’s the weather. Maybe it’s hormonal. I read the news, the blogs and the op-eds and it all feels like hyperventilation and apoplexy to me.

I keep thinking of that old phrase, “diabolical disorientation,” and that’s what the news, the politics and the blogosphere feels like to me, right now. When you’re a kid, you spin and spin, because the disorientation is thrilling and new. Over the past 15 years we’ve watched whole governments spin and spin and now the press does it incessantly…and we’re all disoriented.

Too much spinning makes you want to throw up. I’m at that point, but then I always had a low tolerance for merry-go-rounds, too. Cars, merry-go-rounds, teeter-totters, all the same to the young anchoress. Puke, puke, puke. So it is not really surprising that I am sickened by all of this, these days.

I love the blog that you have. I was wondering if you would link my blog to yours and in return I would do the same for your blog. If you want to, my site name is American Legends and the URL is:

    http://www.americanlegends.blogspot.com

If you want to do this just go to my blog and in one of the comments just write your blog name and the URL and I will add it to my site.

    Thanks,
    Mark

When I was a child and Six Flags Over Georgia was new and shiny (and not the trashy tattoo-art fashion show it is now), there was a ride there in Lickskillet called the “Spinning Top.” It was a huge cylinder that you filed into and lined up around the wall. Then it would start turning and as it got faster and faster, the floor would lower down about a foot and you’d be stuck on the wall like a big science experiment. When the ride was over, there where large trash barrels strategically placed at the exit. Afterwards, I’d estimate at least 75% of the riders would wobble out and promptly puke at the first barrels they could get to. And I was always one of them!

That’s a great analogy to what’s going on today. Spin. Puke. Rinse and repeat.

And then Obi would laugh at me and call me a very uncomplimentary, girly name.

I loved that ride when I was young; tried it when I was in my early 50s and it was the old ride, puke, rinse and repeat cycle for sure - just like our current political picture.

Part of the problem is that the day after the 2006 election returns were in, the 2008 campaign began! Do we not deserve a BREAK between these election cycles. Do these politicians think they are so important that they can and should dominate the national scene 24/7/365?

I linked to a great post at The Wide Awake Cafe today. And added my own take on what she was saying. But lately, A, I’ve been onto more frivolous postings myself. Although I do leave the Bryn worship to you! Lord he is magnificent!

Why should it be surprising that Welshmen are very, very good as Arthur? After all, Camelot is (supposedly) in Wales! :)

My head has been spinning so much from all the pronouncements, the interpretations, the selective reporting and the outright nastiness for so long that I have wondered how you could stand being immersed in it for so long.

I have always enjoyed what you have to say, though I must say that while I drink deeply of your wise and fruitful posts, I do end to skim your political posts.

You have more wisdom than you know-and if now that wisdom counsels to take some time, then who are we to complain?
