February 27, 2007Today’s Lenten MorselIt is not what thou art, nor what thou hast been, that God looks upon with his merciful eyes, but what thou wouldst be. Keep before your own eyes that which you would wish to be. Don’t be distracted by what other people are, but keep focused as much as possible, on your own soul. We all have regrets. We all wish we’d not done some things in our lives (many things, in my case). We all have things we hate about ourselves. But we were all born for a purpose and with a potentiality. Think of the person you want to be - keep that person before your eyes - that’s the person God sees, even when you feel submerged in your sins, and irretreivable. Maybe, even, ask Jesus to stand between you and all you have been, to stand between you and all you would be. Surrounded by Christ, things can only get better. I learned that from a police officer who told me he prayed, whenever he entered a dangerously unstable situation, such as a domestic dispute, that Jesus would stand between him and those to whom he was responding, that Christ would stand between each family member and their worst instincts. It was a powerful witness to me. Christ be with me, Christ within me, I bind unto myself the Name, http://theanchoressonline.com/2007/02/27/todays-lenten-morsel/trackback/ 7 Responses to “Today’s Lenten Morsel” |

Ah, the lovely “Lorica.” A great guardian against many things, especially despair.
“Against the demon snares of sin
Against false words of heresy
The hostile lusts that war within
Against the heart’s idolatry
Against the wizard’s evil craft
Against the death wound and the burning
The choking wave, the poisoned shaft
Protect me, Christ, till Thy returning.”

You heal my soul on days when I am sorely beset.
The cherished Anchoress, plus the Lover of us all and one of His great creations a glass of Pinot Grigio and my two cats Sam and Tim. And I do NOT mean to be at all sacriligious! Those are things that calm some pretty roiling internal seas.

Might I have a little help? I really love the poem. I am heading out here in the next few weeks to serve my country, not in a military role but more governmental. My wife and I are going to be forced to spend 6 to 8 months apart and I just thought the poem fit my situation well. I googled it but came up with not exactly the same thing. Could you clarify exactly what I should look for so I can print and enjoy the whole work. Thanks so much!

St. Patrick’s Breastplate aka the Lorica, aka The Invisible Prayer of Armor is very long. I’ll email it to you, Michael.
