GOP Debate: Here’s an answer I’d like

Graphic thanks to Rand

When I said I wasn’t going to pay attention - this soon - to the endless campaign, specifically the ‘08 presidential elections and their way-too-early and already-mind-numbing debates, I meant it.

There is good debate coverage, though, at Instapundit, Jim Geraghty’s place, Heading Right, Ed Driscoll, Captain’s Quarters, Althouse, Webloggin, Michelle Malkin, Dean Barnett, Wizbang, Sister Toldjah…I’ll be honest, I didn’t read over this stuff that deeply; the general impression I get is that McCain and Romney did well, Rudy treaded water, Brownback was articulate, the questions were predictably stupid and Fred Thompson - about whom I am still only mildly curious - did well for keeping away.

But I do hope someone answered the appalling question, “what do you dislike about America?” with a good, head-knocking, “I’ll tell you what I love about America; I love that you can ask that question - which is nothing but an invitation to bash the country or create a divisive moment - with a straight face and absolutely no fear of any sort of professional or personal reprisal for it. The only thing I dislike about this country is the partisanship that has become so poisonous that Washington has become an international joke, and congress has been reduced to playing politically expedient games on issues that can cost lives all over the globe.”

If anyone gave that answer, please let me know. That person, I might get enthusiastic about.

And give props to all the GOP candidates, who were willing to go into “enemy territory” over at MSNBC for their debate, as opposed to the trembling-lipped Dems, who didn’t have the testicles or the self-assurance to enter their perceived “enemy territory” at Fox. The GOP candidates were willing to go to the land of Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann - two men who could not hate or disrespect them more - while the Democrats “stayed with friends,” for a near-sleepover. To me, that speaks volumes about the openness and guts of both parties. (Yes, Rand, it really does.)

I think, in all seriousness, the whole idea of ten person debates with 30-second, sound-bite and bumper-sticker-tailored answers is almost satire - it’s a game-show model designed to be as penetrating as a prop-knife, and just as effective. It all seems a waste of time and money this far in advance. Things turn on a dime, and a year from now things could look very different on the political front, rendering all of this as meaningless and pointless as it probably already is. Absolutely no prediction, no hyper-enthusiasm for any particular candidate makes any real sense, yet…but if you’re hungering for this illusionists’ theater on either side, well…then you should be happy, tonight.

Like me, Beth and Jeanette were just not that interested, either, but was anyone really surprised - as Jeanette seemed to be - that Matthews could not let the night end without exposing his never-ending tumescence for Bill Clinton?

Video Montage and Analysis of GOP Debate…

I think Fred Thompson is doing the right thing here by waiting to announce. He gets to sit back and analyze the debate from afar which is a great strategy; right now he looks to be the brightest of them all and is my choice for second winner right behi…

But what do you REALLY think, A? I love your description of the Dems.

Do you suppose Rand would mind if I posted that graphic on my blog?

Little Chrissy Matthews is pathetic. And as to “letting go of Bill Clinton” - I did that 6+ years ago when an actual MAN took the oath of office and I was once again able to be PROUD of my President.

Despite missteps he has made, I am STILL proud of George W. Bush because he is steadfast and utterly moral - and those are qualities to be cherished.

I think you would have liked Mitt Romney’s answer to that question. I think he started it with “gosh, I love America…”

May I nominate this for the dumb question of the night. When will the media take some attempt to understand us people of faith. Kudos to the Romney people for coming to Gov Mike Huckabees defense.

What is ironic is that don’t realize that religious people find such questions and tactics out of place and violation of a basically a social contract.
