May 5, 2007Bush drinks water from the bottle! Heavens! The NY Times has reached a new level of spite-for-spite’s-sake anti-Bush reporting. How does George W. Bush, a towel-snapping Texan who puts his feet on the coffee table, drinks water straight from the bottle and was once caught on tape talking with food in his mouth prepare for a state dinner with the queen? You know, I am not one of those people who carries on about Bill Clinton’s sexual peccadillos. If you look through my archives you’ll see little-to-no mention of that behavior…but this article all but DARES me to ask it…were Bill Clinton about to meet with Queen Elizabeth II, would we be reading the following in the NY Times? That would be a very tacky, very snide, useless, pointless and unfair sort of lede to write about Bill Clinton. It’s also a very tacky, very snide, useless, pointless, unfair and yes, just plain childish sort of lede to write about George W. Bush, whom the press has clearly stopped viewing even as a human being. All of this says a great deal more about the press - particularly the spiteful adolescents now in charge of “the paper of record” - than it does about George W. Bush. WELCOME: CQ readers and thanks, Ed, for the link! While you’re here, please nose around. Today we’re also wondering why “abandonment” was shameful when Bush 41 did it, but it is now the “moral” and upright policy of the Dems. We’re admiring a new Franciscan novice and we’re also admiring Doug Ross’ excellent comparison of frivolous and magnanimous political behaviors and scanning the rest of the sphere and finally, after having been forced to reckon with Chris Matthews raging tumescence for his great love, we’re wondering if it is time, finally, for the left to let go of Bill Clinton, for whom much history is seemingly being rewritten. http://theanchoressonline.com/2007/05/05/bush-drinks-water-from-the-bottle-heavens/trackback/ 20 Responses to “Bush drinks water from the bottle! I want to calm the fears of our British friends: Queen Elizabeth was never in any danger of being assaulted with a snapped towel, nor does she need to wear plastic to avoid getting hit with tobacco spit. The snobs……

Do you know what my editors would have done to me for a snarky leded - and not just about an unpopluar president? Then again, my editors (and the publishers) appreciated the fact that although we could describe the majority of our readers as ABC (non-Texans, raised not to put feet on tables, etc.), we wanted the XYZ readers to plunk their two bits down for a copy. I used to buy the NYT Sunday edition when I was in college because it was well-written and even the most NYC-centric stories never mocked Midwestern values.
I’m beginning to suspect that the underlying problem is that more and more media is writing to an audience - a specific, pre-conceived audience - rather appealing to a diverse and multifacted readership. It’s like the advice given to me by an entertainment writer (can’t remember her name, but she worked for the Saginaw News). The gist was that a well-written critique is helpful to someone who never heard of the band and someone who was a diehard fan. The snarky lede might appeal to the already-converted, but it does nothing for the open-minded reader.

Dinner with the Queen…
Probably the same things he did four years ago when she invited him to a formal dinner. How does a figurehead queen of a former worldwide empire prepare for a state dinner with the first of many countries to seek independence from the British Empire…..

I’m afraid Chris Matthews is merely representative of Democrat partisans, dear lady. Bill Clinton was their one and only post-War success story: the only one to be elected to the White House twice on his own hook. Until another Democrat manages to do the same, Clinton will remain their polestar. They have nothing else to tie to…a shame, really, when one considers the tawdriness and vacuity of the Clinton Presidency.
Let’s just hope we don’t someday find ourselves calling him Clinton I.

So, does this mean that anyone who drinks water straight from the bottle is uncouth?
I have to wonder how many desks at the Times have a bottle of water (certainly something French) sitting on them sans any sort of glass. Except Pinch’s, of course. The glass is also French.

I think the proper answer to the question at the debates the other night (which I did NOT watch) about what you dislike most about America should have been “I dislike the nasty MSM/Alphabets, who don’t have a CLUE about real life, and what the current President is doing on a daily basis to keep this country safe.”
FWIW, I drink my water out of a bottle, too. Glad to know I’m in such great company as “W”.

This is a disgraceful personal attack on the President from the NYT. I feel disgust that when the real questions needed to be asked such as weapons of mass delusion. The NYT was, like the Whitehouse Press corps in the Rose Garden, too frightened to stand up for the freedom that was being sold down the river. They all capitulated to the infinite and strategically beneficial war on terror.

The MSM has let the Bush Derangement Syndrome affect every aspect of their coverage of anything having the slightest bit to do with GWB’s presidency. It is a sad commentary on what was once a respected industry. Readership is declining for almost every newspaper in the country. Why do the “powers that be” controlling the editorial bent of political articles fail to see that the half of the population that voted for GWB in 2000 and 2004 might possibly be sick and tired of reading such obviously biased, and cruelly so at that, articles on a daily basis? They are signing their own death warrant, the death warrant for the newspaper industry.
May 21st, 2007 at 1:09 am
Sloan. GWB is unlikely to get half the votes based on his current standing, and as you point out, that can’t be because of newspapers because nobody is buying them anymore. I rest my case.
