May 9, 2007“Feral” Sarkozy signals BDS-by-Proxy on the leftThe other day I said that France’s newly elected leader, Nicolas Sarkozy, was very quickly being subjected to “the Bush Treatment,” before the man even gets down to work: There are some exceptions, of course, but they’re few and far between. Ed Lasky (H/T Larwyn) is seeing something I’ve labeled Bush-Derangement Syndrom-by-Proxy already at work at the the paper of record, against Sarkozy, natch: Sarkozy is beyond the pale for the mandarins at the Times, perhaps because he wants to be friends with America and with Israel, thereby deserving the Times disrespect. Lasky provides numerous examples of hyperbolic gasps at the Times, but the one that I found most striking was Maureen Dowd’s fast decision to suggest that Sarkozy exhibits sub-human characteristics. Writes Dowd: Now France waits to see just how feral and domineering Nicolas Sarkozy will be. “Feral.” Sarkozy is some untamed, wild creature…because he is not the “luminous” socialist - the only sort of leader acceptable to Dowd and her pals whom - as we know - are never wrong. Lasky ends his piece: For the Times, criticism of conservatives comes even before they have had a chance to be innaugurated. Knee-jerk liberals. I wouldn’t call them “liberals”; nothing about these people who lately call themselves liberal - in particular this crew at the NY Times - meets the definitions I was taught as a kid. And I don’t think “knees” enter into it, either. Sorry to say, that only leaves “jerks.” Perpetually adolescent ones. Meanwhile, Gaius at Blue Crab Boulevard and The Volokh Conspiracy both have some interesting sections of Sarko’s speech, which you may not have seen. Not that I disagree with you or your use of the tactic, but the penultimate paragraph of this post seems to demonstrate that you do indeed have an excellent grasp of how one goes about “name-calling.” Just sayin’.

Casey, you’re absolutely right…I actually hesitated to use the word “jerk” because it seemed a little out-of-character for me. But I couldn’t resist playing on the “knee-jerk liberal” thing…and this time I think it’s fair. The man isn’t even sworn in, but he’s being “name-called” “feral?”

Can you imagine the howling that would be taking place, on the left, had Royal won and been subjected to “feral” within 48 hours of her victory? And in a staggering bit of hypocrisy, take a look at how the left is decrying the three day vacation Sarko dared to take after the campaign (a vacation he said he would take, mind you). How dare he use a friends private plane and private boat. It’s “debauchery.” Doesn’t Sarko know that only people on the left, like Bill and Hillary and Laurie David, etc, are allowed to use friend’s private transports? Astonishing.

Considering how quickly Sarkozy was compared to Nazis and to Hitler while the campaign was starting, the present attacks are not unexpected.
Me, I’d call these attackers knee-jerk Commies. Because that’s the political system they yearn for. Leftists may be a polite title - Liberal is no longer applicable, as you have pointed out - but I like to call’em what they really are. Commies.
