Scanning the ’sphere -

A real quick round-up as I am doing the paying work today, and will later this evening be updating the bookshelf:

Btw, the Steel Cut Oatmeal is unbelievably addictive and good.

We’re winning in Iraq, finally, because the Iraqis want us to. Perhaps they are finally shaking off the effects of 40 years of tyranny. This is good.

Quick question:
Is this really how politics were played years ago, to overwhelmingly pass a war-funding bill - one with an attached “hate-crime” item to it that can cause trouble for the churches - and put the president in the position of vetoing his own war spending plus being able to call him a gay hater? Seems kind of underhanded to me. It seems like a manipulation of government for political expediency…and a terrific waste of time and taxpayer money.

Speaking of vetoes, Ed Morrissey talks about Bush’s 4th Veto:

Let’s underscore that last sentence. Bush doesn’t want to end S-CHIP, nor does he want to freeze its funding level. He wanted to increase funding to the program, but Democrats wanted to increase it seven times more than Bush’s proposal — and they wanted to slap a highly regressive tax onto the public to fund it. In effect, the Democrats wanted to take money from the poor to subsidize health insurance for middle-class children.

Thousands of monks have been slain and the situation in Burma looks very dire. Shouldn’t Americans being condemning this? Where’s the UN?

Jules Crittenden notes that Harry Reid is not alone in his appreciation of the good our troops are doing in Iraq. Or, I think that’s what Obama is saying….

Well, if this is true it explains why Mrs. Clinton addressed Gen. Petraeus as she did.

Kobayashi Maru wonders
if there is a vast left wing conspiracy trying to shut down alternative media. I’d say jury’s out…but who knows? Another question is are ordinary citizens and satirists about to be shut down by a “liberal” group that doesn’t like dissent?

Speaking of shutting down dissent, Evan Coyne Maloney makes the rounds to promote Indoctrinate U.

Betsy gives us a perfect example of government inefficiency. Perhaps we shouldn’t let the government run too much…meanwhile Tom Elia finds more wasteful government spending.

AJ Strata notes some evidence that the GOP really hurt itself when it went hardline on illegal immigration. He asks, who tanked the GOP? He also has two links up concerning Syria and Al Qaeda that are very eyebrow-raising.

Ever heard of the Widow Penalty? Me neither, but Florida Masochist has been following some stories about this quirky law which can deport immigrants who are in process of naturalization, should they become widowed. Interesting.

An open letter to Clarence Thomas.

Democratic group targets SCHIP funding opponents, including a Missouri representative…

Democrats — sensing a major political advantage — pushed a multimedia campaign Monday against oppon…

The shameful and libelous behaviour of some of our leading Government leaders, and the lack of action against such behaviour by others, has me very very angry. I am fast reaching the point where I am ready to launch a petition to the Government for a redress of grievances, aka the outrageous and treasonous behaviour of our Congress and demand their immediate removal from office, and new elections to commence in January to replace the whole lot of them. I know it will never happen but I am really angry at them all. Their hate is out of control.

  3. PierreLegrand Says:

Ah yes the Republicans threw away the election…AJ gets that much right.

But it is the anger that Republicans such as myself feel towards Republicans for repeatedly forcing me to work overtime to defeat idiotic immigration reform that has cost them my money. They miss my money a lot more than they miss the elusive and miniscule Hispanic vote…

Republicans lost election after election when they tried to imitate Democrats and they will continue to lose them. In 2004 I probably gave over a $1,000 to various Republican causes…so far in this cycle I have reluctantly given 100.00 to the Republican Senate committee…even that was doubtful.

We are the party of principle. We will not do ANYTHING to win…for those of you willing to do ANYTHING to win let me recommend the Democratic party. They have a lot of experience in that sort of thing.

Having said that I will be voting for Guiliani because I believe that even though he has some weaknesses he also has some tremendous strengths in the areas that should be mattering the most. So I have not comprimised my principles.

Blaming the base for not turning out is dumb. Blame the Republicans for not listening to the base…when we turn out they win.

    Told’ja you’d like the oatmeal! ;-)

The traffic in ATL was so horrendous today I actually got to the hear the beginning of Boortz. He said he’d gotten a call yesterday from one of his Washington contacts saying that “True…It was only the beginning…” on the subject of the battle to shut down conservative talk shows, blogs, commentators, etc. There is definitely a groundswell among the liberal powers-that-be to shut ‘em down and shut ‘em up if they don’t toe the party line. The smears and misquotes will get worse. The contact even said that some had gone as far as hiring private investigators to follow the big kahunas around.

Whether it is really true, I don’t know. How do you really know what to believe anymore? But considering the liberal’s track record, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if it was…

  5. Gayle Miller Says:

Dennis Miller described Harry Reid as a “ghost” and a “puffball” or a bead curtain - something you pass through without even noticing it and said that he was a trifling human being. Great description - but I don’t quite agree. I think there is real evil in the way the Dems on the left are behaving and manipulating. And then HRC proudly proclaiming that she is a FOUNDER of Media Matters! That is not something about which ANYONE should be proud.

And no, Anchoress, it didn’t used to be this way. I’m old enough, heaven knows, to remember vividly how it used to be. Sure there was some minor kinds of sabotage and the like - but amazingly enough, both sides actually discussed ISSUES instead of indulging in character assassination. And I don’t mean to pile on Hillary Clinton, but it seems like all of that really started getting wide currency when she and her consort came on the scene. Let’s face it, James Carville is NOT Little Mary Sunshine and her vicious attacks on any and all of the women who were sexually imposed upon by her husband are legendary.

I find the whole situation tremendously dangerous for this nation because it obscures (maybe that’s somebody’s intent) the real issues that deserve attention!

  6. TheAnchoress Says:

Gayle, I don’t know if I would lay the dismal “scorched earth” state of American politics at the foot of the Clintons. Remember, Robert Bork got “borked” back when Reagan was in office…the seeds for the out of control hate were sown a while back. But it certainly has stepped up since the 1990’s, where EVERYONE is concerned.
