Hillary “presidential” and far away - UPDATED

Ann Althouse is wondering if yesterday’s hostage incident affects the way we feel about Hillary Clinton. She and her commenters note the glowing tones of the press who carry on about how “calm” and “presidential” Clinton seemed while she was hundreds of miles away from the incident.

I missed the whole story and don’t really care; I know the press will always shine Mrs. Clinton’s image as much as possible.

I was a little surprised, though, to get an email from my Li’l Bro Thom - the least cynical person I know - remarking on how convenient the whole hostage drama was - coming on Friday and ending just in time for the nightly news broadcast. “Bad Thom,” I said, “that’s very cynical.”

He agreed. “I hate myself for thinking it, but then I read this piece about people doubting Hillary’s character and this story about Hillary canceling a fund-raiser because the host had been indicted and I can’t help thinking she’s a woman in need of a sympathetic story that takes these other stories off the frontburners, and makes her ‘look good,’ in the process.”

Now, now…let’s not go there. To suggest that team Hillary fabricated yesterday’s drama is to fall into the same sort of derangement syndrome that suggests that any terrorism plots discovered and busted up are contrivances of the Bush administration. We cannot afford to lose our heads and completely disbelieve everything that is put before us.

But having said that - the press’ gushing over Mrs. Clinton is kind of icky. It’s not new, of course; who can ever forget this gag-inducing paragraph:

The Clintons, who live in Chappaqua, N.Y., had interrupted a visit to Israel to make a brief trip to Jordan at the invitation of King Abdullah II.

Stepping over broken glass, silver knives and napkins on a carpet soiled by blood and plaster dust, Bill and Hillary Clinton held hands to affirm their abhorrence of the bomb that tore through Wednesday’s wedding party.

Ugh, every time I read that, my skin crawls. How did the planet ever get so very lucky as to have both of these people alive at the same time, wedded and one flesh, to save the world from - well, everything - and to do it with such panache, style, presidential bearing and…glowing, glowing, helpful press.

My Li’l Bro’s reaction makes me wonder: having lived through 8 years of BDS, do we really want to elect this woman and live through 8 years of HDS and continuous, unabated polarization or balkanization? I suggest we do not. Can the country stand it?

UPDATE: Gateway Pundit says the Presidential Model Hillary got some of her facts wrong last night in her press-adored speech.

Ed Morrissey rounds up some of the fawning, swirling press spin. Did you know that Hillary’s “handling” of that “mini-crisis” is the equivalent of what Rudy did at 9/11? Wow. Does the press really think that that sort of over-spinning overkill helps Mrs. Clinton’s credibility? I guess they do; and they seem to think people are very, very stupid and incapable of making fine distinctions, too.

Clarice Feldman both mocks and informs.

I make no accusations, but I will say this. When I read (on line) the “breaking news” yesterday; I had less desire to turn on the TV then I do for a Los Angeles freeway chase. My gut just screamed, “Don’t you DARE fall for that.” Even if it was all true and unplanned, I.just wasn’t in the mood for the over hype, but mostly, couldn’t bring myself to believe it was real. Hats off to Brother Thom! If it was real, well, thank God it ended well as far as no lives being lost, AND I didn’t have to endure the coverage.

If the non-bomber who needed nationalized healthcare were not real, Hillary’s people would have invented him.

My skin has crawled from Day One with the Clintons . . . First time I became aware of them was that 60 Minutes travesty where they said marital problems happen. They were sprawled together with their offspring — I still maintain Chelsea has Webb Hubbel’s chin — on a hammock and got their daughter to aver she was glad she WAS their daughter. Can you say child abuse?

  4. fporretto Says:

It’s unclear whether the press’s unabashed adoption of Mrs. Clinton (a tangent: I make a point of referring to her as Mrs. Clinton at all times, just as an aide memoire, you understand) will do as much to help her as it will to destroy the press’s remaining reputation for objectivity and trustworthiness. I’m inclined to let the theme play itself out.

  5. DADvocate Says:

Somehow, I find some irony or black humor in the fact that the person that wanted to talk with Hillary is insane.

  6. Hantchu Says:

Unpleasant, unpleasant shrill woman who keeps rude company. I disagree with her politically and I find her character and morals repugnant, but I’m afraid what grates the most is her style. She makes women look bad. Not a credit to her gender.

  7. Aitch748 Says:

If Hillary gets elected, prepare for the mainstream media to act like cats in catnip about it for the duration (after treating Bush like Mussolini for eight years).

DADvocate - thanks for the laugh.

Also, although Mrs. Clinton has repeatedly said she will NOT attack other Democrats, according to a sub-site on the Barack Obama site - out of the 23 days since she made that pledge, she has attacked Obama on 19 of those days.

Both Bill and Hillary Clinton are completely amoral hustlers, one no better than the other. Neither is qualified for the presidency (although he AT LEAST governor of a state and so had some executive experience). I don’t think the other one needs to return for another slurp in the public trough! Moreover, I don’t think our nation could survive it!
