Hillary gets stupid about Obama

Even back when I was a Democrat I always found Mrs. Clinton to be rather less impressive than the gushing media narratives of the past 15 years would have it, but she seems to be in a panicky/meltdown mode that demonstrates to the masses just how underwhelming she is.

In one of the stupidest moves I have ever seen any politician make in any political campaign: Mrs. Clinton is going after Barack Obama because - while he has publicly said he hadn’t considered a presidential run until recently - he had in fact…wait for it…told his Kindergarten teacher that he wanted to be president!

Aides to Mrs. Clinton lashed out at Mr. Obama’s claim, which he repeated yesterday, that he only recently decided to mount a presidential bid.

“I have not been planning to run for president for however number of years some of the other candidates have been planning for,” Mr. Obama said at a news conference in Iowa. The Illinois senator has previously alluded to a disputed allegation in a book by Jeff Gerth and Don Van Natta Jr. that Mrs. Clinton and President Clinton made a plan before he took office that she would also seek the presidency.

Mrs. Clinton’s team responded with an opposition research compilation pointing to news reports that Mr. Obama has expressed an interest in the presidency over the years, including as far back as third grade and even kindergarten. “Senator Obama’s comment today is fundamentally at odds with what his teachers, family, classmates, and staff have said about his plans to run for president. Senator Obama’s campaign rhetoric is getting in the way of his reality,” a spokesman for Mrs. Clinton, Phil Singer, said in the release…

Oh. My. Gawwwwwd. Maybe this is what happens when you have so little resourcefulness of your own that you over-rely upon the “research resources” until you get lost in them.

Maybe my memory is failing me, but isn’t it commonly thought a “lovable” part of the Bill Clinton hagiography that he - from a young age - declared his intention to become president to his mother and teachers? Isn’t that a story (and a moment) that is supposed to both awww-endear Bill to us and also burnish his patina as an awesomely visionary “inevitable” man of history? How come Obama’s not allowed the same notions? That seems very picayune and un-inclusionary of Hillary, doesn’t it, that Obama’s not allowed his own lofty vision?

But then again, we’re supposed to believe that Mrs. Clinton never thought about becoming president when she made her first senatorial run. Her ambition was simply to serve the people of New York. And she was “not thinking” about it when she ran for re-election, too.

From Larry Sabato:

“It’s all too petty,” a professor of politics at the University of Virginia, Larry Sabato, said of the exchange over who first harbored dreams of the presidency. “It shows you how little they have to talk about. There’s not much of a difference between them on the issues.”

Mr. Sabato said the Clinton campaign’s attack seemed more like a send-up from the news satire site “The Onion” than a serious political statement. “Nobody cares in the slightest,” he said. “I’ve had easily 1,000 students tell me they’re going to be president.”

I like the Obama camp’s response:

A spokeswoman for Mr. Obama, Jennifer Psaki, ridiculed the Clinton camp’s tactics. “I’m sure tomorrow they’ll attack him for being a flip-flopper because he told his second-grade teacher he wanted to be an astronaut,” she said.

Hillary is very lucky there is a writer’s strike going on, or the comics would be running with this. There is an SNL skit waiting to be written here: Bad-crazy-Nurse Ratchet Candidate trying to bat down the Bright & Troublesome Kid, who keeps popping up saying essentially the same thing Bill “I-always-never supported-Iraq” Clinton says as Peck’s Bad Boy Bill ambles about eating other kid’s lunches and snapping bras. Or something

This ill-conceived attack on Obama makes her ripe for endless ridicule.
Team Clinton has just given Team Obama the weapon which could well take Hillary down: mockery. Since it is unlikely that the mainstream press will ever cover the fundraising issues and shady connections that would bring down any politician other than Mrs. Clinton, her opponents cannot rely on “scandals” to whittle Mrs. Clinton down to size. Therefore, the candidate who can - by simply shining a humorous light on her own words, actions and tactics - get the country laughing at Mrs. Clinton, is the candidate who will defeat her.

Mrs. Clinton has been rackety since her awful performance in debate before Tim Russert, but this move - coming right on the heels of the woman’s “see how presidentially I stroll to the microphone to declare how emotionally distraught I was and still am about those endangered campaign workers taken hostage in another state. I’m regal-dammit-regal; write-that-down!” moment gives one the impression that her derby soapbox - the slickest, nackiest, best-funded, favorite vehicle, expected to fly to victory, has perhaps a few loose screws; it has lost a wheel and is skidding and swerving sideways as it careens out of control. That’s how you go into a rollover and heaven knows, that’s not good.

A few days ago, Mrs. Clinton seemed a little too eager to grasp a “victimized-but-presidential” narrative that had me wondering if megalomania was going to become part of the ‘08 campaign. But now, with this move? She just seems like a giant Can O’ Crazy, with New Improved Petty Vindictiveness added. I’m not the only one noting that this was a very stupid move. Obama should make the most of it while he can, because a bad move like this will be quickly buried.

Tom Maguire and Ed Morrissey are also finding this Hillarian salvo against Obama to be laughable and worthy of satire.

Maguire notes that this is also not good, and Sister Toldjah expands.

I don’t see Obama looking any better then Hilary in this example. I it was a lame attack, sure Hillary’s response was just as lame, but I don’t think either looks all that great here.

But then I don’t share the visceral dislike of Hillary that so many people have. I suspect that when she wins the nominiation, and certain people go absolutely crazy, it will help her win the Whitehouse more then hurt her.

David - as I wrote the other day, I don’t see where 8 years of Hillary Derangement Syndrome will be any better or more useful than 8 years of Bush Derangement Syndrome. But I think Obama’s team answered this nonsense appropriately. It needed to be mocked. They mocked it.

She forgot to say, “As a mother, I was offended to learn that Senator Obama lied about his kindergarten record. As you know, even though I was named after Sir Edmond Hillary, I really wanted to be an astronaut in kindergarten because NASA sure did hate women back then. I was able to drop that dream after my letters to them at age 6 shattered the glass ceiling that existed in the space program. I have always been honest about this.”

Maybe it’s Hillary’s oh-so-clever way of getting the striking writers to end their strike?

  8. MagicalPat Says:

She does not want the writers strike to end. She would be flayed by SNL and the late night shows over this idiocy. The writers strike also got her out of the next debate.

She wants that strike to end the day her White House records are released.

I found this diatribe, written by President Clinton’s labor secretary and all around pal of the Clinton’s Robert Reich, against Hillary’s stepped up attacks against Obama rather odd. In the piece, Reich tackles criticisms Hillary&#8…

When Did Scott Ott Become Hillary Clinton’s Campaign Manager?…

All right, I know a great satire site when I read it. Scott Ott must have contracted with the Hillary Clinton campaign for this argument, right? Only a true satirist or a complete idiot would go after a campaign opponent……

  13. DADvocate Says:

What’s so pathetic about this is that Hillary could have turned Oboma’s accustion on its ear. She/her camp could have repsonded with something like:

“Yes, I have been preparing to be president for a long time. The Presidency of the United States is the most important job in the world. It is not a position for someone who impulsively decides he/she wants it. It is a job of a person who is well prepared.

Doctors spend many years preparing for their profession. Americans should look for a well prepared person as president.”

Instead she responded in a very juvenile and scary manner. Digging up dirt from kindergarten is scary. I wonder how far she is willing to go to discredit someone.

  14. Beth Says:

isn’t it commonly thought a “lovable” part of the Bill Clinton hagiography that he - from a young age - declared his intention to become president to his mother and teachers?

YES. But that wouldn’t stop the hypocritical Hillabeast from stooping to something so stupid.

I really can’t stand Obama, but it’s sure not because he thought being President was cool at age five. Dumbest complaint about a candidate EVAR.

As far as she needs to go, and then some. Discrediting isn’t enough; destruction and ultimate power is her goal. I find it amusing–yet predictable–that moonbats who think Bush has too much power are so comfortable with Hillary!
