Dems supported waterboarding in 2002? - UPDATED

While I was away this story was all over the net, but I think I like Ed Morrissey’s take on it and the insightful comments of his readers, the best. Do take a second to read them.

What I am wondering, and I’m surprised that I see anyone ask it (or I simply haven’t noticed)…why - back when all the brouhaha, finger-pointing, political posturing and moralizing on waterboarding was the top story on every broadcast - didn’t the Bush administration simply say, “ummm…you guys knew about it and approved it in 2002″? Why now?

We’ve been watching the Bush administration stay frustratingly silent in the face of every sort of charge, and in the face of resolutely negative press coverage for the past 5-6 years.

Why now, suddenly, do we read this as his last year in office approaches? Will the next year become one story after another blowing one meme after another out of the water before he leaves the Oval Office? That would be - and you know how much I hate this word - freaking AMAZING.

And I don’t know why - I’m not following the story closely because I’m so far behind - but I can’t help thinking that this story is going to blow up in the Congressional Dems faces, too. Just a hunch.

You know, I would not like to be waterboarded.

That being said, I have to wonder how many things I do of my own free will would not be allowed at Gitmo.

I know that my Basic Training would not be allowed.

I don’t think my Fraternity Initiation would be allowed. I find it ironic that the Democratic Party won’t let the people who planned the 9-11 attack be treated as harshly as the pledges at Animal House.

Most ironicly, I don’t think the CIA would be allowed to take the prisoners to Bush Gardens.

Seriously, Bush Garden’s Willamsburg has a new coaster, Griffon.

Griffon carries riders up 205 feet, then hurtles them 90 degrees straight down at 70 mph. And that’s just the beginning. It is a floorless dive coaster, has a 90 degree drop from 205 feet high, and a 130 foot second drive, two Immelmann loops, and you hit 71 mph, pull 4 Gs, and the ride lasts 3 min. My wife rides coasters (I don’t) and she LOVED it.

But can you imagine what NBC would make of that? “Three minute terror machine! Riders are crushed under four times their weight, terrorized by drops of over twenty stories! Induces nausea, terror, etc. etc. etc. The terrilbe fear filled screams of the riders can be heard all over the park…” If the CIA was somehow able to put these guys onto a first rate rollercoaster, they would be investigated by Congress, attacked in the press, and charged by the World Court.

So lets get some perspective here. Waterboarding is not nice, but neither are the guys who are getting waterboarded.

I think you are absolutely correct. I think the President decided early on that he could deal with just so much and that there were more important things to think about (like GWOT) than what idiotic troglodytes were saying about him. He is the most secure human being I’ve ever seen and truly inspirational in his responses!

The next year+ should be really amazing!
