January 8, 2008Hillary & McCain take NH, and it’s goodAs Ed Morrissey says here:
My only concern with the results - with any of the results coming out of NH - is that as an “open vote” state it’s hard to know how many of the votes came from non-residents, who was voting or from where. It seems to me that such a circumstance makes fraud so easy, you’d think political parties would want to change that, but (shrug). I was out tonight and have not had a chance to see any of the speechs or read a lot, but my first thought - upon hearing that the races had been called for Clinton and McCain was positive - I find the results rather encouraging. I was getting a little creeped out thinking that an untested but charismatic guy could so overwhelm the process so quickly in such a dangerous age. So, in a way, it seems right to me. This thing is anyone’s to lose. I would be quite happy to see us head into one - or two - brokered conventions this year, and it wouldn’t surprise me if we do. Nothing is going to surprise me this election season. Now that NH is over, it looks like Rudy - at the eleventh hour - is finally going to engage. He’s got a piece in the Wednesday WSJ where he basically lays out his whole platform. Better jump in, Rudy, or you’re going to miss the party! But tonight, as I say Compline, I will be offering it for the safety of President Bush, who is traveling in the most dangerous of places. The WSJ had a good piece today about Bush’s undeniable, and positive, impact on the Middle East. More on the primary: Dan Riehl says no one should be surprised, that the polling facts were there and were ignored by just about everyone. Amba tells what is bothering her and what is not: John McCain reading his victory speech, eyes down on the page. Hmmmm…I read that and you know what immediately pops into my head? That God is not “done” with any of us, yet. Maybe Hillary is going to be the next president, but maybe a rock-em-sock-em road to the WH is necessary for her to break out of her manufactured, overcareful mold. Even the velveteen rabbit became real eventually. She’s got to want to, though. I think that’s how it works. Best comment so far:
Other Best Line from Vodkapundit:
C’mon, now, this is fun, ain’t it? Sister Toldjah wonders if Gloria Steinem, who was feeling pricklish, is happier now. Her post illustrates just how stymied the “experts” are and how unpredictable the races have become. Beth says, “the pundits are all on crack! Big Lizard: Barack, Check your brakes! Gay Patriot has an interesting excerpt from the left. More thoughts on the election, in general, from James Lileks via Dr. Melissa.
If Gina Cobb’s readers had their way, Fred Thompson would be da man! Jim Geraghty wraps it up. And Michelle Malkin has the exit poll and count summaries. Some good reflections on tonight: http://theanchoressonline.com/2008/01/08/hillary-mccain-take-nh/trackback/ 6 Responses to “Hillary & McCain take NH, and it’s good” |

I think Ed is jumping on a bandwagon. Not to take anything from a win, but if you’ve been leading a race for months, then suddenly see a localized surge at the last minute, and finally find the election close, which polling data do you believe? This election has been going on for too long, and people are desperate for new info or a new story. My take on this is that it’s a horse race between Hillary and Obama, based on his ability to catch her over the long haul. Luckily, we’ll be through the vast majority of the primaries early on, so we can finally get past the hype and into the real campaign.

Three weeks ago (a lifetime in the silliness that is present day American politics), NH was going to be HRC’s coronation. She was ahead in the polls by 12 to 20 percentage points.
A 3 point win hardly constitutes a ‘comeback.’
As I noted today, with every bounce, the ball loses energy.

As I watched Hill glowing in victory last night, it hit me what she wants from the nation. She wants a relationship; she wants a marriage. This relationship, this marriage, will be based on listening, and caring, choice and change. She stated last night that she found her voice through listening to the people. This shows that she is looking to the nation to complete her.

Well marriages are forever. That’s not a healthy thing for a politician to want. I expect we’re going to see an Oprah-esque campaign now. And shame on all the people who vote for someone because he or she cries.

I’d be interested in learning how much of the absentee ballots went for Hillary. Exit polls show that she got a large portion of the votes from grey-haired old ladies, and big-time operations like Hillary’s are able to pick up those old folks at the old folks home and drive them to the polls (and help them in the voting booth). But how many of these same targeted groups like old ladies and union members did they prevail upon to use an absentee ballot, voting not only days or weeks before Iowa, but again, with the assistance of some Hillary operative to fill out the ballot?
Even so, I do not see a lot of people suddenly liking Hillary and wanting to enthusiastically vote for her. Perhaps Dems will vote for her out of duty and obligation (or because they, Dems, just can’t bring themselves to actually vote for a black man), but I still do not forsee sudden love for Hillary.
Moreover, these results may give her and her operation a false sense of validation, and may therefore stop her from shaking up the team, which will then continue to alienate everyone except a Clinton sycophant.

Anchoress: I thought you might appreciate my theory on the Clinton NH win: I just recalled this episode of Star Trek, and I think it is the only rational explanation for her victory:
Episode Title: ‘Elaan of Troyius’
Episode Number: 302
Synopsis: “While transporting the prima donna Elaan to her wedding, Kirk comes into contact with her tears, which make men fall in love with her instantly.
So, an alien spacecraft must have been taken to area 51 during the Clinton administration, and the tear formulation altered to weaken females.
