Spitzer: Everything I always thought he’d be - UPDATED

Never liked him. Always thought he looked like a punk, talked like a punk, acted like a punk - I wrote that a loooong time ago.

So, now it seems Governor Eliot Spitzer, (D-NY) is in hot water due to what Flip is already calling Shtupergate (better than Putz-gate, I think), a scandal about a prostitution ring. Imagine that. Will he resign? A Democrat Governor resigning and it’s “only about sex?” He’ll fight on, I predict; if he does not, I’d bet it’s about more than just a little patronage.

His rather in-character remarks are here on video. I feel badly for his wife.

We know almost nothing about his Lt. Governor, David Patterson. But really, whatever; he can’t be much worse.

As Spitzer is a Hillary Superdelegate, I’m sure she is not happy today, and I’m pretty sure you’ll be seeing a resignation down the pike.

[Update - ] You KNOW Hillary is going to want this story to go away fast; there are only two places she can go with it, she can play “I sympathize with his victim wife” which doesn’t work, because it reminds everyone of all the Fight-it- Out Cinton High-Drama, or she can try to joke and say, “hey, at least Bill never had to pay,” which probably would not be appreciated, but really, her best bet is to make this go away. Instapundit says Hillary’s website has scrubbed references to Spitzer. I think that gives you your answer. Almost could say that was monsterously efficient. I’d love to see the talking points.

Gateway Pundit has the picture Hillary can’t scrub.

Recall, Hillary’s own troubles began, when she could not find a comfortable answer to Spitzer’s idea of giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants among other issues.

Michelle Malkin has the backwards and forwards of Spitzer.

Pirate’s Cove notes that you have to read 15 paragraphs in before you read that Spitzer is a Democrat in the NY Times article. The CNN article doesn’t mention Spitzer’s party at all. Imagine that. NRO notes that in this photo gallery only Republicans are ever identified with their party.

Jay is rounding up press reax.

AJ wonders if Spitzer was taking flesh bribes to look the other way

Althouse says there will be no sympathy.

Prof. Bainbridge has been not liking Spitzer for a long time.

I don’t think Spitzer can contest this one, dear lady. It’s not just the violation of his marriage vows; it’s a self-indulgent criminal act by a man who’s arrogantly paraded his “ethics” before us all as he vowed to “clean up Albany.” Troopergate didn’t quite do for him; this will.

The real question is what sort of political fallout the Democrats will suffer from the discovery that the governor of one of their most important bastions, spoken of as a future presidential contender, is a lawbreaker and an adulterer. The Dems have had enough of both, wouldn’t you say?

  5. Piano Girl Says:

I don’t understand why he had to bring a hooker from NY down here to Washington. What, don’t we have enough prostitutes in DC? I would imagine the local hookers should feel quite insulted!

I’m with you- I never liked the guy.

maybe if he weren’t so sanctimonious and ‘holier than thou,’ I’d be able to muster up some sympathy for the guy.

In the end, it is his wife and daughters that I feel for.

There was a news video of his daughter leaving the family home this morning and my heart went out to the kid. The amount of damage Spitzer wrought wasn’t limited to the betrayal of his wife and the citizens of New York. The real damage will be played out in the years to come, borne by his now teenage daughters.

How do you suppose they’ll look at men, with the behavior of their father as a ‘life lesson’?

Roger L Simon gets it: … the outcry against Spitzer was not because he was some man seeing a prostitute, but because he was a guy who puts prostitutes in jail seeing a prostitute. John Carney: There’s a certain poetic quality to this final act …

Siggy I agree with you - I feel awful for his wife and daughters (and the fact that any cameras are trained on them a all). This morning I heard a man call this a “victimless crime.” Seems to me his wife and daughters are proper victims; they have had their foundations ripped from them.
