Things that make you go “awwww…”

From Deacon Greg, from whom I shamelessly crib the photo.

“St. Bernard and German Shepherd” (from PackerBronco)

And Buster in a Fez, about a million years ago. Why? Because he calls me from school at 2AM (he knows I’m reacquainting with my old friend, insomnia) and announces, among other things, that he is walking the campus enjoying a cigar, and wearing an anti-Che tee shirt and a fez.

“Where’d you get the fez?” I asked.

“A friend was wearing it and I took it off him.”

It sometimes amazes me that Buster has friends.

“You just took it? You shouldn’t steal fezes.”

“Yeah. He knows I’ll give it back. It’s been a long time since I wore a fez, and I’m liking it.”

My children are ever-eccentric. Elder Son once wore a fez to the sixth grade. Picked up at Epcot, of course. Buster - about age 6, here, appears not to have lost the taste for them, either. And who’d have thought it? He has friends who wear fezes. I feel very old and boring.

I gotta tell you, a photo of a 6th grader in a fez trumps a picture of a pope any day- even a pope talking to a dog the size of a VW.

Now, despite your sons predisposition to wear exotic headgear, I will not ask what else your boys may have worn…

  2. TheAnchoress Says:

Heh. My elder son was the 6th grader in a fez. Buster was about 6 years old in that picture.

Their mother once dressed up as St. Patrick, complete with Miter.

Awwww! How sweet! I heard it said that there is more to the purring of a cat and the wagging of a dog than any of us understand yet. I totally and completely believe that. The unconditional love of these animals is amazing. Look at the love in that dogs eyes. Very moving!

  4. PackerBronco Says:

You have to change that caption to:

    St. Bernard and German Shepherd

    Awwww.

Since Pope Benedict is a notorious cat-lover, this photo especially makes us dog-lovers feel good.

BTW, check out a documentary on the famous “Cats of Rome”. They’ve been around since the Egyptians brought them over to the Eternal City (but the locals mistreat them dreadfully, which I always hoped the new Pope would add a voice of protest. Haven’t heard if he has).

    Cheers,
    Victoria

I look into that dog’s eyes and see, not unconditional love, but a dog’ unconditional hope that the nice man will have all kinds of yummy food he wants to share with the “poor, helpless, unloved doggie” (who might just pass out any moment from the obvious lack of food!)

  7. Bender B. Rodriguez Says:

“You can drown understanding in facts.”

That jumped out at me too when I read God and the World. I think it displays a great deal of humility from a guy who is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge — he realizes that a simple, humble faith is often more important than knowing all the minutiae.

  8. TheAnchoress Says:

Bender it is the thing that is so overwhelming and strikes me over and over again. The man is undeniably brill, and yet his humility is an even more staggering brightness. The book is marvelous. I’d meant to put excerpts up from it all week, but I’m writing so many notes as I read, that I may have to just spend time thinking about it all.

  9. Peregrine John Says:

Fezzes are fun. Some friends of mine even came up with a fake secret society so they’d have an excuse to wear them.

But personally, I’m more curious about the anti-Che shirt!

  10. TheAnchoress Says:

    Anti-Che shirt, here.

  11. Gayle J. Miller Says:

Another lovely, albeit co-dependent, doggie! How marvelous. Reminded me that I’ll have the fun of spending tomorrow late afternoon and early evening with Sis at her house, listening to “our” Siamese Tim yowl about how mistreated he is (a conceit that all Siamese seem to share, despite how luxurious their accommodations) and get multiple slurpy kisses from Zeus the pit bull, a most delightful and shy doggie, and even more multiple slurpy kisses from Harley the corgi mix - the most needy animal I have ever met.

It is, I kid you not, way better than psychotherapy. Laughing at Tim (who was spoiled rotten by me for 3 years and is now being spoiled rotten by Sis for nearly a year), and loving on the two dogs. And eating some of Sis’s good cooking as well. Plant seeds in the little starter thingies, watch a DVD or two. Going home to the amazing Sam - another needy animal (28 pound Maine Coon cat) but beloved nonetheless.

Hope your weekend gives you gifts of sleep and many chuckles.

Hey, we could sure use a shipment of those Anti-Che shirts out here in LA!

[…] the fez is just normal college-kid stuff, but wearing the anti-Che shirt on campus takes real brass. Good for Buster! Because he calls me from school at 2AM (he knows I’m […]

  14. Peregrine John Says:

Anchoress: Thanks! I figured it was one of those.
    KIA: My thought exactly.
    PackerBronco: Best. Caption. Ever. (IMHO)

  15. TheAnchoress Says:

I agree, PackerBronco, that is a great caption. I’ll put it up there and credit you.

  16. Piano Girl Says:

Love the picture of Buster at 6 years old! And yes, I could well imagine him wearing his anti-Che shirt on campus! I have a piano student who wears the pro-Che shirt ~ I don’t quite have the nerve that your dear son does, or I’d wear an anti-Che shirt when I teach this student. Unfortunately, I don’t have tenure…
