Reading the handwriting on the wall…

Did we always go to handwriting analysts to determine the characters of our presidential candidates?

Looking at the handwriting samples of McCain, Clinton and Obama, I got the weird sense that none of them would be president, come November.

But then…maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

With all due respect, I doubt you can find a reputable psychologist who believes in handwriting analysis. The main problem is that character traits wax and wane on different days and in different situations. When we say, for instance, someone is honest does that mean they are 100% honest all the time? Are there days when they are just 10% honest? I’m sure Bill Clinton had honest days. Did his handwriting change on that day?

Handwriting analysis is as good as astrology and are quite similar. Think about it. What’s your sign? ;-)

An eerie thought that none of them, however flawed, would be president come November. What catastrophe — blessing? — would befall the nation for such a thing to happen? What rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouches towards the Oval Office to be born?

Isn’t handwriting analysis supposed to identify who wrote it, not one’s state of mind or personality? I shook my head over the article, as it ignores such factors as, say, the age of the person writing and the type of correspondence. Lincoln’s “modest” writing looks a lot like other correspondence I’ve read from the 1880s. (Folks didn’t waste paper back them.) McCain’s handwriting looks a lot like my father’s and mother’s, which isn’t surprising considering they’re from an age in which penmanship was as important as content - and I suppose McCain has similar aches and pains in his hands and wrists.

Come on. EVERYONE knows that phrenology is much more reliable.

Buckeye, you didn’t really think I was putting stock in it, did you? :-)

No - my comments were aimed at folks who buy into such hogwash, like LA Times readers.

I never was into handwriting analysis, but lot of people were, and horoscopes, and tea leaves and I don’t know what.

What is different is the people paying attention to that stuff who ought to know better..

I find it amazing that the handwriting analysists managed to come up with the popular image that each of these politicians has. Obviously this is an underappreciated science, the only other way this compelling information could have been discovered would be by listening to the talking heads on CNN.
