I need a cat. Or maybe another puppy to keep the collie company! Blogging will be light and probably not so political. Although…as long as I’m posting this… Is free speech really such a tough concept? Three pieces yesterday on a Huffpo writer admonishing The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart for daring to make jokes about Obama that have any sort of substance to them. Stewart is apparently only to gently mock Obama, and only when doing so also mocks John McCain. There is something ominous about people telling other people what they are permitted to say and what they must not say. And it is the height of stupidity to tell a comedian how he may or may not pursue his laughs. I hope Stewart has the stones to say “bite me, buddy, it’s still a free country, ain’t it?” I suspect he might, although I’m sure he’d be less coarse than that! Thankfully, some Stewart fans are defending his right to mock!. I don’t know what has happened to the word “liberal” but the liberals I grew up with were not interested in shutting down other people or controlling their words. And they weren’t doing this, either. Must be some a new sorts of liberals, or something. Julie at Happy Catholic directed her readers to listen to this three minute op-ed by Scott Simon of NPR. Simon takes straight dope about Obama and his campaign finance flip-flip (and the moral questions it raises) and on his playing the race card. Go listen. Seriously. It will surprise you. I bet it surprised the Obama Camp. Speaking of whom…Bob Owens has created the Obama Bus list to keep track of everything and everyone being thrown under during this presidential campaign. Finally, because I’ve saved the best for last -
You can watch here. Color me impressed as all get-out. I don’t know how I’d missed all the announcements, but do check it out. Since I’m sure there will be no MSM coverage, it will be interesting to see how the thing fares on the strength of the alternative media, alone. Jeanette has installed the widget and you can keep track of how the fundraiser is going at her site. I just checked and so far, they’re at a quarter million dollars! Bob Hope must be there in spirit! If you are getting a cat you might try an ordinary orange tomcat, they have outsize personalities and relate to people more than other cats (has been my experience).

I vote for a cat, as well. My ordinary orange tomcat (come to think of it, Nuisance was anything BUT ordinary!) gave me 21 wonderful years of misbehaving…he was so well named. Took out the turkey one Thanksgiving (when he was still spry enough to hop up on the stove) and much preferred human food to whatever came out of a can. He’d been known to flip over his bowl of food and wipe his paws on the curtains if he didn’t care for my choice of his food. And if one cat is good, two are better because they will keep each other company and entertain you for a long time!!!

Yes it does and since it was turned over to the Chinese, well, can’t say anything about it since you know he was supposed to have bi-lateral talks not include the people actually in the area who also happened to hold part of the purse strings.
Sometimes I just want to puke about the way the press has just pummeled him for the last 7 years.

Re: the HuffPo piece on John Stewart … this seems like a good setup for understanding where liberals want to go with a revived “fairness doctrine”, doesn’t it? Yet there is a simple, powerful reason for why their efforts will fail, even if they succeed in regulating TV and radio broadcasting — The New Media. All that a revived “fairness doctrine” would accomplish is the final relegation of broadcast talk media to cultural irrelevance, and the permanent establishment of New Media as the home of free speech.
In a snarky sense, though, wouldn’t “fairness” require that entertainers pummel Obama just as mercilessly as they pummeled Bush during the last 8 years?

Probably another canine companion would be best. Most cats don’t really cotton to dogs, although my sister has a male Siamese who considers her half-pit Zeus to be HIS dog. Which is fine because Zeus considers Tim to be HIS CAT! It’s very peculiar and a teensy bit disturbing!

Incidentally, although the coloring is slightly off - that cat looks frighteningly like my Sam (the Wonder Cat)in his favorite morning snoozing position! Here I am 51 miles away at work and MISSING HIM!

I have to be honest with you, granny, I am not so sure that NRO is correct on this.
Sometimes I feel like NRO is a bit like the Catholics who sacrifice pastoralism for perfect rule-following. NoKo took down their reactor - that’s a pretty dramatic move on their part. Clearly an understanding has been come to.

With the premptive ban on criticism, or even humor, we are getting closer to Solzhenitsyn’s experience — eight years of hard labor for referring, in a private letter, to “the man with the mustache.” Ask Imus how he feels about the state of free speech these days.

Coincidentally with your religious simile, good Anchoress, the WSJ’s editorial is titled “Leap of Nuclear Faith” (see also their link to “Vetoing the Verifiers”). Even the NYT acknowledges that “United States officials have accused North Korea of hiding an uranium-enrichment program, a charge that the North’s declaration on Thursday failed to address.”
We disagree about Bush, but IMO we agree that a definitive evaluation can only be made from the perspective of history.
