September 3, 2008Roundup of Reactions to Palin Speech:::Latest Round Up Is HERE and this morning’s round up, as well!:::END Next big challenge: the debate, and Biden is a tough guy. Reckless, but tough. There is a general consensus, from reading around, that the Obama camp coming and with “hey, someone WROTE that speech for her” was an incredibly dumb move. Incredibly lame and laughable. What was interesting to me was hearing the newsgasbags mentioning “she did not write the speech” before the Obama camp’s statement was released. I’m just sad to see that the press was willing to make such a dumb complaint for him - to set the stage for it. I mean…really. I’d be embarrassed to utter it. Also, note that some of what she said last night, she said on Friday, so she must have had some input. Also…here is a newsflash for you…speechwriters, they write speeches. Not policy. What did you think of the speech? Second-stupidest statement of the night (after the shocking knews that speechwriters write speeches): Candy Crowley saying “I don’t know how such a strong woman will play outside this hall” Now the Republicans - formerly “afraid of strong women” - are apparently too appreciative of strong women, who will scare the electorate. Un-freaking-believable. Also, Anderson Cooper said something about how Obama has “run his campaign” and employed several thousand people, so there you go. Ready for the Oval Office. Palin’s 8 years as a Mayor and 2 years as Governor don’t amount to a hill o’ beans in this crazy world… Press headlines: Palin Mocks…. Palin Casts Herself as Washington Outsider. Casts herself? Um…. Lorie Byrd: So Much for the Redneck Beauty Queen Mayor of a Pissant Town Betsy Newmark: Wow! Glenn Reynolds many links I didn’t hear Olbermann say this, but he sounds a little down Andrea Mitchell: Glum, glum, glum. I’m not the only one who has noticed Wolf Blitzer: “A star is born Jim Geraghty: My e-mail box is thrilled. Cam’s Talkbackers are thrilled — “you called down the thunder, and now ya have it.” Andrew Sullivan: Still wants DNA tests, doctor testimony and medical records and proof of Trig’s parentage. Reduced to bitching about Palin’s facial expressions. Sigh. Ace has Reactions Tracey: Loving Piper
Strata: Happy Lizard: Fear the Teddy She’s not going anywhere Pathetic Press: Never seen a pregnant girl before Happy Catholic The Value of Service (Must read) I can’t help but wonder what Peggy Noonan is thinking right now. I feel bad for her. Gateway Pundit: Feeling good Video here I’m calling it a night. I notice a few more donations with no names. How kind! Please know I am humbled and very appreciative! Thanks. http://theanchoressonline.com/2008/09/03/roundup-of-reactions-to-palin-speech/trackback/ 23 Responses to “Roundup of Reactions to Palin Speech” |

Gov. Palin was outstanding.
A very impressive night for her.
She is sharp, strong, articulate, attractive, etc.
If only she were the GOP’s Presidential Nominee…
Really, I know I am tough on the Senator, but Palin is real, not a Washington Beltway Celebrity without sincere accomplishment.

I don’t expect that anyone writes the entirety of their speeches themselves these days — otherwise spending all that money on speechwriters is a pretty big waste. So the fact that a speechwriter(s) was used in this instance would not be shocking. Even so, I’m sure than Sarah Palin had some imput and would need to give an A-OK to the final draft to make sure that the words were in her voice.
But even if she did not contribute a single comma, the attitude and demeanor were all her. The steadfast determination in staring straight ahead, right into the camera, when the teleprompters were all to the side, was all her. The lack of whining and crying in the face of unfair attacks, and giving some pretty hard punches back, was all her.
My flipping around the stations showed pretty much everyone thinking it was a rousing success. Wolf Blitzer and even Campbell Brown were impressed. Even Olbermann and Matthews, while not enthusiastic, begrudgingly gave her some positive credit. A “star is born” was heard from more than one commenter. Perhaps the vicious attacks were so fast and so furious that they have largely burned themselves out, and the MSM will actually start looking at the merits of the issues she raises (reporters actually report on issues? imagine that!).
I would be interested to hear non-American reactions though. Especially on BBC, I was hoping to hear somebody make a comparison to Margaret Thatcher, but no one did.

Re: the children on TV
Do not underestimate the power of seeing the kids to create more support. In 1988, the thing that put me over the top to enthusiastically support George H.W. Bush was the clip that they showed at the convention of him and the family at a picnic or something, and watching his two little granddaughters run up to him and hug him. We now know that those little girls were Barbara and Jenna, but that little image served to humanize H.W. in a way that was not done before. It showed him as an everyday guy.
So, if everything else did not endear Sarah Palin to America’s women in the heartland, as well as a few men, then seeing the kids, including Piper holding Trig and slicking his hair down, will help put them over the top too.

“People who like this sort of thing will find this… the sort of thing they like.”
It was the VERY first thing that Olbermann said, even before the camera panned to him from the stage. It was easy to miss, though he said it in such a funereal tone, I can imagine it caught a lot of people by surprise.
BTW, he warmed up in hate later, followed ably by the MSNBC panel. But for once, Chris Matthews had spot-on analysis of the speech. Instead of the reflexive “red-meat” moniker, or the sourpuss Donna Brazile reactions of “Bush speechwriter”, Matthews said she was unlike Hillary Clinton as you can imagine. Palin was chosen because she is her own woman, and reflects America in her own life story.
Well, it makes a change from this weekends horrific “Beauty Queen” rhetoric, not to mention the whole evil baby switcheroo rumours.
I thought Palin was SUPERB. I just gave McCain money I didn’t have, but it was worth it to raise my head high tomorrow.
Cheers,
Victoria
[The press clearly had its "bush speechwriter" talking points from Obama. If I were a professional journalist, I would have been mortified to say them...but they all dutifully did. - admin]

I thought Sarah’s speech was great - she’s made me excited about voting this election.
I thought Piper was so cute! I also noticed Cindy McCain holding Trig during Guliani’s speech, and I thought that was sweet as well. Did you catch Cindy’s reaction after Sarah’s speech? She’s definitely an authentic Sarah fan.

Just a thought.
Does anyone think that last night may have turned the corner on the pro life movement? The Palins and McCains did more to shoot down the pro choice arguments than anything that’s gone before?
We have a medical needs child (Bridget McCain) a teenage mom and a special needs baby, and everyone’s dealing.

Oh, yeah, hubby and I about died when Piper licked her hand to smooth down her brother’s hair. Priceless and perfect. What sweet kids.

First, I love that little clip up here. I saw that last night and just laughed. So sweet when kids are not aware that you are catching them in some of the cutest things they do. I love that!!!
Second, Anchoress, I am stunned at the hateful reactions of some people by Palin’s speech. Maxed Out Mama put up a comment that is incredibly hateful and ugly and shows just how much pain and anger some are in over Palin and McCain.
I’ll look forward to reading your input on the speech today.

Excellent round-up, Ma’am!

Two important points:
1. The RNC PR wrote the speech for her. The same folks that gave you the speeches for Bush and Cheney during the last election.
2. She mentioned in her speech that she didn’t want the bridge. This suggests that she is against earmarks and pork barrel spending. What she failed to mention was that she took the money. This definitely is a contradiction in terms.
[It's getting a little tiring to hear "oh, she didn't write her speech! One of Bush's old writer!" Clearly since some of what she said last night she also said on FRIDAY, she had a hand in the speech. And speechwriters WRITE SPEECHES, not POLICY, okay? So people HIRE them to WRITE SPEECHES. The lamest thing I have EVER heard, "this politician had help with the speech!."
And the bridge thing...hey...it's okay to change a mind, ain' t it? Obama got rid of his public funding, voted for Fisa, and so on. Please. Find something read. - admin]

Saracuda ROCKS THE HOUSE! (Updating with new links all day)…
I was afraid to get my hopes up last night - I mean, I adore Sarah Palin, I think she’s a breath of sorely-needed fresh air, and I think she’s a brilliant choice to the Republican nominee for Vice-President, but I’ve had high hopes dashed before….

This speech was the best I’ve ever heard by a VP candidate. Sarah hit every note with perfect pitch. She proved herself fully capable of going toe-to-toe with anyone. To step onto the national stage and take command with confidence and intellectual vigor (not to mention good humor) speaks volumes about her and makes John McCain look like a genius for picking her.
I think the Vapid One just lost this election.

What, Obama doesn’t have Campaign Managers to do that? Next thing you know, they’ll be trying to tell us he writes his own speeches and makes his own breakfast in the morning.

Governor Palin wrote most of her own speech. The Left is writing its own epitaph. I think Jonah Goldberg’s comment is my favorite one of all: “She was put on this earth to do two things: kill caribou and kick butt. She’s all out of caribou.”
I don’t think that the abominable left wing loons will go away any time soon. What is going to happen is that they are going to start fading steadily into irrelevance. Their reactions to Sarah Palin’s nomination has been so unhinged, so utterly over the top in their vicious disregard for truth or civility that they have finally, at long last, fully illumined for all to really see and understand all of their profound mental illness, inimical agenda and general anti-Americanism!
I hope I live long enough to see them utterly marginalized so then unbiased people can begin to evaluate the past 8 years and those leading forward.
